I heard about this place on WP and thought I would have a look.

I'm 48 and was just diagnosed at 47, after my son was diagnosed. I got one of the last Asperger's diagnoses in the US before everyone went over to DSM 5, so it was an Aspergers (will be ASD in a few months) diagnosis.

So I am still learning. It's very weird to have this thing that sort of frames my reality be unknown for so long. Even stranger to realize that other people knew it before I did. Going through suspicion to tentative self-diagnosis to diagnosis by a professional involved lots of revisiting memories I haven't thought about in years-and all of it made more sense with the understanding that it was autism.

Anyway, good to find this community here. Hopefully I can contribute something positive.

Welcome :)

Hope you feel right at home here, and find many answers. Our members are quite friendly, and helpful, so feel free to join in on our discussions.

As you're still relatively new to your diagnoses, I recommend taking a look at our recommended resources, for books on AS. If you have yet to discover Dr.Tony Attwood's books/ advice, I'd recommend starting there, as he seems to have a rather brilliant understanding of the spectrum:

Thanks!
In truth, Autism has become a special interest.

I read Attwood's "Complete Guide" cover to cover several times. I also watched a lot of videos with him on YouTube. I took a course in behavioral genetics and another in Neurobiology through Coursera so that I could better understand the research.
I am a bit obsessive about it at this point, so I will certainly check out the resources.
:)

I was exactly the same when I first learned about it too :)

Thanks Ereth and Kuribo!

I sense that you really do know exactly what I am talking about, Vanilla! Did it ever die down, or has that interest stayed so central and strong ever since?

Tangent: I like your avatar and tag. I always liked hedgehogs and had a soft one instead of a bear when I was probably too old for soft toys... I remember being tested in school when they were trying to figure me out and they gave me a triangular grid of dots to make some sort of path or tree with:
*
* *
* * *
* * * *
And I showed that I knew the answer but then drew a whiskery nose on the tip of the triangle, and a couple of eyes and then filled in the back with bristling quills...
The said "why did you make this drawing when it was not what we asked you to do?"
"Because I like hedgehogs. This hedgehog is happy and more interesting than these diagrams."

Haha, yeah, hedgehogs are cute :)

I'm still interested, very much so, but I have returned to uni, and so my focus has shifted. Also, I've accumulated a lot of knowledge now, and find much of the knowledge I come across now I have already added to my catalogue of knowledge, so the novelty of it being new is kinda gone, but new information always excites me

Can't have enough knowledge, as I see it. What are you studying? If I could go back I think I would study developmental neurology or molecular biology. Also finding virology very interesting.

Cool, science is always an interesting field. I'm an animation student :)
