Getting lost when out and about

Hello!
I had a rather harrowing experience in a supermarket on Saturday. It was like someone stuck a fishbowl over my head, my vision was blurred, all sounds merged into one noise and everything seemed to be moving very fast around me. It took me 15mins to find my way out and I spent 30mins shaking in the car before I could drive. Finally seem to be back functioning after spending 24h in the dark and silence. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to avoid this happening again?
Thanks!
LJ

Hmm...can you give us more detail about the role of the supermarket in your life? Okay, that sounds weird, but what I mean is, can you tell us, is supermarket visiting 1) part of a regular schedule (every week you go on this exact day at a specific time), or is it 2) something you just do randomly, at random days and times?
If the answer is currently 2, maybe having a set schedule for when you visit the supermarket will make the whole thing more predictable, a more predictable part of your routine, something for which you are therefore psychologically more prepared, and it will thus be easier to handle.

It might have been a panic attack. Long ago, I used to get them in the supermarket and other high-stress places. I'd have to leave my basket of groceries in the aisle and get out immediately. What you described could be due to a number of things though. I would consider seeing a physician just to rule out any physical issues that may have caused it.

Last time I had anything remotely close to that was last year, Christmas shopping in our largest mall.

Big mistake. Just too many people in too close a proximity.

Thankyou for the replies. I was just passing and needed some washing powder of all the mundane things... I think having a bit more prep may help but it was mainly the bright lights, loads of children screaming and running all over the place and it was packed with people! It was such a strange feeling. Just so disconnected from myself. I don't really want to get into a position where I have to avoid it.
Thanks again for your repies
