Gaseous Fuel

My province is virtually all nuclear, currently building more. My mothers sisters husband was a maintenance manager at one. Quebec next door likes hydro damming rivers, really cheap. As our neighbours to the south are finding out. Making aluminum not cheap. We closed our coal plants Brampton where I live built a natural gas plant a few years ago.
 
I know you have the largest iron mine in the world need coal to make steel, unless you make green steel using hydrogen, something we are starting to do. after all iron ore is iron oxide need to remove the oxygen most mills use metallurgical coal, rather steel needs a bit of carbon. green aluminum, also uses hydrogen to remove oxides for ore.
need electricity to make hydrogen or natural gas. Either way your country and my country just partnered in mining to learn off each other biggest mining conglomerate in world. China needs your rare earth ores you need our expertise in processing these marriage made in heaven. Keep in mind our nuclear reactors do not need enriched uranium, can use thorium and plutonium technically breeder reactors, why they are illegal south of us.

Do not like breaking bubbles familiar with steel aluminum, painting farming, cold climate and have engineering background. Like good debate. Plus my 2nd cousin lives in your country.
 
Our renewable energy industry just got to an awkward stage where change now has no choice but to happen.

We now generate far more green power than we can use, we're building more and more battery banks but at the moment demand for storage is huge. And at the moment we still need our coal and gas fired power stations but they're having problems because they have a minimum speed that they can run at and you can't just turn them on and off at will, a shut down and restart takes days. So at the moment a lot of electricity is being generated and dumped.

The situation is also playing merry hell with traditional business models and making it much more difficult for the traditional power companies to manage their finances. It used to be that they and the mining industry worked hand in glove to manipulate and control prices and that relationship is now dissolving. Already if those power companies all closed their doors tomorrow 30% of Australian homes and businesses wouldn't notice, they're generating and storing their own power and only remain connected to the grid so that they can sell off any excess. The entire business model has changed.

This google maps link shows you a top down view of a shopping centre down the road from me, note all the solar panels. Not just on the roof of the building but also on all the undercover car parking spaces. They're not just supplying their own power, they're selling it.

Why no do what we are doing turn electricity into hydrogen, first into ammonia which can be shipped anywhere
Make your own steel and aluminum with this hydrogen You have the ore. I suspect your and our mining companies largest on planet are thinking this way, Saw something a few days ago one of our universities developed a way of making electrolysis more efficient game changer.

Some of them indeed are, and then there's a couple of others still screaming and crying like babies because it's not the 1950s any more.

One of our biggest, Fortescue, has diversified in to ammonia and hydrogen in a big way. Their ammonia powered engines are now driving big ships as well as European trains, they sell hydrogen to Japan, and they're already setting themselves up for green steel production.

We're the world's largest suppliers of many minerals including iron, bauxite, manganese and lithium.

The gasses it gives off can be deadly but in many other ways it's less dangerous than petrol because it's less flamable. And it's already used in massive quantities by many different industries so it's not like we don't know how to keep it safely contained. Australia sees it as the future for our trucking industry but we're highly unlikely to trust the average car owner to run around with a tank full of ammonia.

That said, Toyota have produced a car with an ammonia engine and it's being trialled in China because their pollution laws are a bit on the slack side.
 
One of my uncles lost his job years ago I guess he made a mistake leaked ammonia in plant he worked at worked with ammonia a few times in lab spilled no big deal. just cleared lab ventilated, ran tap.

It's extremely dangerous in closed in spaces such as inside a factory, but as you mentioned it loves water and is easily diluted, where as if you spray water on a petroleum spill you just make more mess.

I think I can see a future with no old fashioned big power companies in Australia. Our power companies all used to be state owned utilities and we privatised them in the 80s and 90s, but the states retained ownership of all the infrastructure. So all our power lines are state owned and maintained by private contractors. That's leaving less and less room for power companies to make any money.

Here Solar is king. We have more sunshine than just about anything else. My city of Adelaide gets about 270 days a year of unbroken sunshine, much of Australia does. What we don't have is enough water.

We have lots of water, plus building more nuclear here in Ontario.

Similar crown corporations plants and lines owned by province. Private contractors maintain lines. only way rural areas get power, Remember my brother in law complaining years ago, high voltage lines not cheap. His town way up north had to put in substation. I guess i cost him and his neighbours a lot. He liked arc welding, fixing stuff. Meanwhile electric heat in my house cheap.
