Hi! I'm an aspie and also a researcher on autism. I am currently writing a research proposal for PhD program, and I would most happy to know what you want to see in future research. I am more of a qualitative researcher and I like to collect stories from many people, so I am thinking to take the same approach in PhD program, but is there anything you would like non-autistic people to know about being an autistic? Or is there any question you would love to have answer on? Love to hear from you guys!
 
Meltdowns are the hardest thing for NTs to understand, I think. And executive function problems, I would love to understand that.
 
Yes seconded. Overloading, shutdowns and meltdowns.

Don't suppose you have the facilities to connect the qualitative stories with MRIs?

no its just perversion with different labels, the bulls are forced!!!!!! to run to feed peoples greed and others inadequacies and at the end ,if not horribly injured by being trampled they are corraled to be speared repeatedly !!!!!!!suffering terrible pain by cowards that call themselves bullfighters .

I would like NT's to experience sensory overload firsthand. They should experience what it's like for a full day, but any amount of time is better than nothing. I've heard of places that provide this experience (what it is like for those with hypersensitivity i.e. aspergers), but I don't know of any near where I live.
 
I'd like people to know that the stereotypes around autism and more specifically (for me at least) asperger's are usually completely false. We are not all Rain Man.

Maybe volunteer work with autistic children would be good.
People who experience fake disabilities end up being so anxious around disabled, they become predjudiced.

I really understand a desire to have NTs endure the experience of those of us they look down on, but making them treat us worse is not going to help anybody.

Helping Autistic children might be a life-changing experience. That would be good for them and good for us.

As for future research, I would like to see a truly empirical test for autism, be it genetic, some sort of scanning device, for example similar to an MRI, or anything that will show up as a difference between autistic people and neurotypical people. The reason I feel that this is important is that older Aspies have difficulty in getting a proper diagnosis. I went through the system for years trying to get someone who my insurance would pay for to discover whether or not I was autistic. I never got anyone to go that extra step to either verify or contradict my suspicions until I finally paid for a specialist out of my own pocket to confirm it, using mostly tests I took from other doctors. He was as surprised as I that the insurance doctor didn't take it the extra step to arrive at Aspergers. He then was able to take it even further and suggest that I was ADHD inattentive, totally unexpected to me, and is now treating me for it and I feel better now than I have ever before. This is why I feel that a test for older Aspies and others who have taught themselves how to function in a neurotypical environment is important.

It is very hard to prove what your brain feels to others, a handicap of a cripple or blind person others can see and have empathy for....but it takes a fair amount of intuitive perception to read the tells in another person to know what they feel on the inside of their brain....:(

It is easier for most people to just demand we conform or get out...a few words and the problem is solved!:confused:

People like to take the easy :imp: path!:confused:

That is why the Ark went out empty...and New Zion will not be over booked even with 6,000 years earth population lined up to get in.
People take the easy path and ignore Gods real words most of the time...even the church people?:confused:
It isn't that hard to figure out what is and isn't correct in the Bible...most of the Holy men don't even try!:(

I'm not sure if that fits your exact field of research, but I would really like to see something on misdiagnosis, or delayed diagnosis, among HFA/Aspies, from a psychiatry angle.
I'm thinking in particular about the fact that many are diagnosed with, and unsuccessfully treated for, various mental conditions, especially among the "older" generations (and "older" can really be anyone older than 30). It would be interesting to see what incorrect diagnoses were previously made, and maybe things such as how many specialists were seen before a proper diagnosis was made/how the proper diagnosis came about.

Branching out from that, I'm sure there's a lot to study regarding Aspie sensitivity to medication, but I'm not sure if it fits within pharmacology or not. Maybe it's just me, but I know my body reacts oddly to drugs: I'm resistant to a small set (in spite of not having taken them previously, thus building resistance), and on the other hand, I react more strongly to significantly smaller dosage of other drugs. I do develop more side effects, at a faster rate, than I should. For some reason, I have a feeling I'm not the only one on the spectrum with those reactions, and if I'm right, it would be very useful to document it, because it means that a different approach is needed pertaining to prescriptions when it comes to patients with autism.

I love all the funny comments but seriously... We now have the technology to do what I would like NT's to experience. With VR goggles and some good headphones... Also give them something to make them mildly nauseous or unsteady... Build a program that lets them live in our world for just a little bit...
They might stop some of the bullying when they see how hard it is for us to function every minute of every day in their world.

I don't know how to create "brain racing" in people who don't think, but it would be worth a try and not real expensive.
 
I am not out to bash NT's but there is so much negative information that trashes ASD. Just some positive light on a bunch of people who aren't loser, sex crazed, monsters would be nice.
 
It would be nice to have a study that shows how Aspies can contribute to a successful business and in a society.
