Exercises for improving short term memory

zurb

Eschewer of Obfuscation
I am wondering if anyone has experience or knowledge of exercises or apps or such like for improving short term memory.
I'm not thinking of memory tools like making word associations, but things that might actually help the brain function better.
For example, have you tried any apps like Peak Training, or similar, or other non-electronic-device exercises?
Were they helpful?

It might sound strange, but I was actually rather surprised at how affective playing ladder, in StarCraft II, would sharpen my mind, improve memory, and allow me to function so much better. Takes dedication, but it's the most affective thing I've tried, yet. Having regular, intellectual, conversations, helps too, if you're able to have them regularly enough.
