dvd players

A conventional Optical Disk/DVD player will have two laser diodes. One that emits a beam for CD's and one for DVD's. Sounds like your DVD laser diode is probably kaput.

Though you might consider opening it up to clean the DVD laser diode using a micro fiber cloth and distilled water. Sometimes dirt and dust can obscure them to the point that they no longer work.

However the odds are that the diode is just burned out, and as the post above states, just replace the player. No one I know does repair work on such things for a reasonable price as it's not cost efficient.
