It says don't be shy, well I was shy. I never truly introduced myself.. I have been on here for nearly 2 years and now I have the guts to somewhat introduce myself. My name is Sarah, I was clinically diagnosed with aspergers syndrome. Currently I am navigating the recovery of a brain injury. I am interested in forming some friendships with some fellow lovely people on the spectrum. You can message me personally if you would like to chat 🙂

Hi, I was very recently diagnosed as ASD-1. My special skill is masking (even from myself it seems😊) but after some serious frustration on the part of my family, and the suggestion of a friend, I went through the process of talking with the med professionals. It's a bit of a shock to receive the diagnosis and look up information and watch videos and try to take it all in. This explains so much, but leaves a lot of questions too. I have my space and routines I feel safe in, but hope to find some support here, and look forward to getting to know you all.

Welcome, @Grondhammar. I assume from the name that you're a LOTR fan?

Getting a diagnosis is just the start. It can take a long time to process what it means to you and how it affects your life. For me - after a long time spent processing things - it means that I am free to function my own way and not force myself to function the way people around me do. Their user manual is different from mine.

I hope you find this forum as welcoming and helpful as I have.
 
@Nervous Rex, indeed! I have very few people who recognise the name, thanks for noticing😊 And thank you for your welcome. That's a great way to put it -- others' user manual is different from mine. I can tell already this is just the start of the journey. I'm hoping to reach that freedom you mentioned.

I have to confess that I didn't understand the name at first. But I have a serious case of Fear of Missing the Reference, so when I see a unique name, I do hard core googling until I understand it.

I do love LOTR. I've read the books three times. I watch the movies once or twice a year and quote them an unhealthy amount.

I was sad that they left the "Now I can die, for I've seen the oliphaunt" quote out of the movies.

I wasn't only feeling like an alien, I was actually called alien - more accurately speaking, I was called UFO. I carry that name with pride, because I admit that it feels rather accurate description 😁
 
Hi @RealisticRobin, welcome! I found this forum three-ish weeks ago due to a recently received diagnosis, and almost immediately have felt less weird. I'm still awkward😅 but I found it so much easier to communicate with folks here than elsewhere. I hope you also come to feel at home here.

Welcome, @RealisticRobin. There are a lot of us here that realized we're autistic late in life. We grew up in a time when there was so much less awareness of autism and so much less tolerance for differences.

When I was diagnosed at age 47, I looked online that day and found this forum. This fourm was a great help for me to figure out what my diagnosis meant for me. I hope you find this forum as welcoming and helpful as I have.
