Since running Windows 7 (seems like I'm always a bit behind; installed windows 7 for the first time in may this year, after using XP for 10 years or so) I haven't set it on autohide.

I actually like how the quickstart icons as I had them in XP blend in with opened up applications now. Having it somewhat translucent doesn't make it that annoying to have around either.

My taskbar is to my left.

I don't keep mine hidden, I like to easily access things (and I look at the clock often). I think in the past when I was a lot younger I may have kept it hidden, I can't quite remember to be honest.

Not only did I have it hidden when using desktop environment with one, I chose to install a window manager without one.
