Do pain killers not work on aspies as well?

it takes enough narcotic to swoon a moose, to help me. I find that mixtures work best on my pain [NSAID+acetomimophen+narcotic+anti spasomodic/muscle relaxant. have spinal issues and general arthritis.
 
I recall hearing something about how people with severe cognitive impairment tend to benefit far less than the general population when administered analgesics. The theory is that this because they are unaware of what they are taking and therefore do not experience any placebo effect.

Of course I am not suggesting that people with aspergers are cognitively impaired or unaware of what they are taking. I do however wonder if perhaps aspergers makes one less capable of the self delusion the placebo effect relies on.

On the topic of dentistry: my dentist gave me some tylonol threes afterward. They did not work for me. As soon as the Novocaine wore off I was delirious with pain. It was the only time in my life when pain induced maniacal laughter. Thankfully I happened to have some Demerol lying around.

That's quite plausible. A bit of smoke and mirrors has been a somewhat sound medical practice for a long time. The power of the mind can be pretty interesting. Some people have exceptionally strong wills and once they set their mind on something, they either will themselves to live and recover from an otherwise incurable cancer, or will themselves to die and no intervention stops it. And then a bunch of other examples more in the middle, like one woman I know was given a placebo and told it was an energy pill, and she stayed awake in a manic rush for 48 hours cleaning house and running full steam.

It was the worst the first time I had it. I didn't know what it was. The hospital was too busy to give me something for pain. After me scaring kids with my screaming, they gave me something for my pain.
 
I've been thinking seriously about pain as of late due to a flair up of an old neck injury.
I've just come back from a meeting with a specialist at a CMATS appointment who's told
me to see my doctor & get a perscription for Amitriptyline.... which is a Tricyclic
antidepressant. Not the greatest result as I really wanted them to do a scan so I can
control my treatment instead of having the NHS just treat the symptoms. I was also told
the classification of the pain is Chronic & it's unknown currently if I will have this pain
for a long time, so it should be easy for me to stay on sick benefit for the time being.

I realy don't know what to make of the Amitriptyline... I guess I'll find out on Tuesday.
Anyone have any experiences with this one as I'm starting to regret avoiding the
opiate based PK's ?

I took Elavil (amytriptyline) back in the 1990s, but as an antidepressant. It didn't really have much of an effect, regular or side.
 
Pain killers work for me but not for as long as I think they should. Local anesthetics work just fine. Painkillers like for sore legs or a headache work but they seem to wear off quick. With painkillers in general its hit or miss, same with allergy medicine. Some works, others don't do a thing, and some while they work they don't work for more than half their advertised time.
 
I rarely take anything for pain except aspirin, for some reason nsaid's don't work at all. Have taken both codeine and morphine for a severe knee injury and an ankle injury, neither of which helped all that much except to make me sleepy and dizzy.
 
Only a very select few painkillers work for me, dihydrecodeine (sp?) worked best, whereas ordinary codeine made me feel really dizzy and sick and does nothing much pain wise, even at high prescription only doses. Diclofenac works well too but is prescription only in the uk now at any dose, other NSAIDs barely do anything. Paracetamol doesn't have much effect either. I have a very high pain threshold so rarely need painkillers but it would be nice to have some guaranteed to work for the rare cases I do need them. Local anesthetics also don't work on me.
 
After seeing the Doc & having a good chat about what my options were, I've been given some Capsaicin 0.075% cream.
I'm to see how I manage the pain with it over the next 2 weeks & I'll keep with the Ibuprofen 3 times a day to keep the
inflamation at bay. Funny really as I covered my neck & shoulder with White Tiger Balm last night, which was an odd
experience. But it did drown out the pain I was suffering under & I imagine that this Capsaicin cream will work much the same
way.

Okay well I tried the cream yesterday.... applied it to my shoulders top & back. It was a nice day so I went out for a
walk. After walking around two miles to a friends I sat for a nice cup of tea & then the burn kicked in. It was my 1st
try/application of this cream & wow holy hell... My shoulder felt like it was basteing in the sun no kidding lol. Yes my
shoulder & neck were not hurting, but it realy felt like I was past that point of 'Yeah you just burned your ass in the sun numbnuts' kind of feeling. I realised it was because I was sweating profusley & i recalled the INFO Sheet that came with the cream saying something about avoiding a bath or shower immediately before or after applying the stuff. Haha oops & I think I walk too fast for this Capsaicin cream :)
