Curiosity with number plates

It has always been rather an amusement with my husband, how on the road, I am always pointing out number plates. I have simply no idea what interests me, but no matter what, my eyes are always drawn to them.

I can detect which country a number plate comes from. Since I live in France, I see numerous different ones and find them rather fascinating but have no idea why lol

I do the same thing! I 'collect' them - that is, spot how many countries I can see, and always check the supermarket car park out to see what's there. A couple of days ago I saw one from Sweden, very rare this far south. Occasionally I see one I don't recognise and it bugs me until I can get home and see where it comes from. I saw BH once, and couldn't work out where that might come from. Turns out BH is British Honduras, and old colonnial name for Belize. I can also tell what town they are from (or were registered in, to be more precise).

I always look at plates and try to make words, acronyms, or peoples' initials, or find some meaning in the numbers - birth dates, house numbers..
I do it automatically, I've always done it :)

Not quite like you in this regard, but then again, that is because I know where they are coming from and also, it is only recently that I realised that I am fascinated by them.

I make words from the letters and figure what relationship the numbers
have to each other, so that I can recognize the cars that belong to the
people that I know. Just looking at the car color/shape/model doesn't
help.

I memorize as many as I can, numbers and letters and then sometimes write them down in a tiny notebook, depending on where I am. I once memorized a school bus license plate automatically as it turned a corner, further up the road it smashed into several cars and then fled. When the policeman came to look at the damage to the cars, I went out and gave him the license plate number, he was very happy, and shook my hand. I did the same memorizing of plates yesterday in the parking lot of my bank, of suspicious-looking characters who might rob the bank or people coming out of the bank. I read too many mystery stories.
