I remember my mother watching me take apart
some old necklaces [I wanted the beads to make
something new out of]. She said "You're always
happy when you're tearing something apart."

She seemed puzzled, disapproving, and then
sort of embarrassed that she had said it. She
didn't explain what she meant. I was 10 years
old. I still take things apart to make new stuff.
