car seats

Some of the first cars I rode in weren't equipped with seat belts let alone any other safety devices.
I have a scar on my forehead from tumbling off the package shelf of a 1956 Mercury and hitting my head on a two gallon steel oil can on the rear floor. The old Merc used a lot of oil :D
 
The first seat belt mandates were in 1966 in the USA. The first child restraint laws began in 1978 thru 1985. I was 18 when the first car seat regs were in place,a bit too old to use them.Child safety seats have been around since 1930,but weren't often used.
 
Yes, and I was pretty old before I was tall enough to legally be in the car without one. Here it's 135cm or your 12th birthday (I think, if I've got that wrong correct me) and I did reach 135cm before 12 but I was older than most when I reached that height.
 
I did use one when I went to school in the early day by taxi but aside from that no, they weren't law in the UK at that time.
 
My booster seat was my mom's lap, and later, the fold down arm rest in the back seat that served as a barrier to keep my older sisters apart. There were lap belts, but they were usually buried in the cushions. When I got older, I always put my seat belt on.
 
No. I don't think our 1964 Ford even had seatbelts. Later on cars had them but nobody used them.
 
Yup, I was a child in the 90s, it was illegal not to. Though I'm pretty sure that I would have had one even if it wasn't, it's unsafe not to.
 
When I was a kid there were no car seats or seat belts. I started wearing them when I was in my twenties. I realized that most of the people were killed or gravely hurt in accidents, were ejected from the vehicle. The chances of that happening when you are buckled in are greatly reduced. Why would you not buckled up? My kids were always in car seats when they were little. We used bigger seats as they got bigger. When they were big enough, they just used the vehicles seat belts. All of my kids still use seat belts and their kids have care seats or buckle up. The hospitals here will not check a newborn out with out a car seat, which I think is a very good idea. If someone can not afford one, the hospital will make sure that they get one.

I have a five point safety harness in my dragster. They strap both shoulders vertically and have a wide lap belt with an anti-submarine belt thru the crotch with a single quick release on them and are mandated by class. I have a ten point rollcage in it and you strap yourself to the chassis so it is actually a really safe ride at any speed. Seatbelts do save lives ;)
 
If all cars had seats like that, we wouldn't Ned these complex, troublesome, and apparently DANGERPUS airbags!
 
There are diagonal side bars in the cage that are welded in place,so it is a pain to get in and out,but there are also folding units available that make it easier. My cage was added to stiffen my chassis so I went with the fixed ones instead of having a weaker point in them.
