A random thought from today, to explain a little... Perhaps why I often don't feel that much need to fit in
Often on a Sunday afternoon I have a routine.
First stop is at a local flea market, not a huge one, Calgary isn't that big. A friend of mine describes this flea market as a gathering place for all the "rejects" of society, said light heartedly
I've been going to it for a few years now, and know a few people, both vendors and fellow customers, and there are lots of little conversations I can have, and usually have. I can browse and not buy a thing and still have a good conversation.
Next? I'll walk a few blocks away to a local coffee shop that is fairly iconic, more to the point it attracts a rather diverse crowd of people, and a few what I'd call oddball people, much like the flea market, and many times I've had random conversation with total strangers, it's just that kind of place. Also, some of my friends tend to frequent the coffee shop, and I never know who I might bump into there.
I've occasionally been into Starbucks and I just don't fit in there! The two places I mentioned above are both very "local", nothing corporate about them. They are the kind of places where I feel acceptance, where I don't need to change who I am to find acceptance with others.
I will mention the name of the coffee shop, if you live here in Calgary or if you ever visit here, you should check out The Roasterie, an awesome place to hang out, to read a book, or play around with your laptop. Along the same vein, I would also recommend Caffe Beano, it has a similar vibe.
I also find that involvement in the local art scene, provides much of the same experience. Not that life is free from some struggles along the way.
As always, feel free to disagree.
