Honestly. With all the government secrets. I wouldn't be surprised if the launch to Mars was already done, and has some kinda research station, or something, now.

Secretly it happened 6000 years ago but then humanity had some meltdown and we just forgot about the lost humans on the dark side of mars. They've kept evolving and now choose to stay hidden, but their teenagers get their biggest kicks bringing ice cubes to the surface to muck with our current rovers.
