SUNDAY, Dec. 16 (HealthDay News) -- Despite media reports alleging that the gunman involved in the Connecticut school shootings had Asperger's syndrome, experts were quick to assert Sunday that there is no link between the condition -- a mild form of autism -- and violence.

When I first read that on a media report, I felt like someone punched me in the gut. Just found out last week that I'm an Aspie.............then this happens. So horrible so senseless, so inhumane...........we are so NOT like that. Now I feel in such despair, mostly over what happenned, but also that the rest of the NT world will think all of us with AS are just like that one evil person. I did finally read another media post that said the shooter had other issues and that the majority of AS people are not violent like that.
Having a hard time shaking the feeling that I'm some kind of monster too. Wish there was more quality help out there for adults with AS. I know, I'm obsessing, but I can't seem to stop, yet anyway.
 
What if he had diabetes? would we blame that?
If 1 in 88 of the population has autism, then there is a 1 in 88 chance any criminal will have it, even if there is no connection

True...............I'm just so new to the diagnosis of AS that I freaked out over the idea that something that horrible could be even remotely linked to Aspergers. I am feeling a bit better now that I'm sure AS did not cause that to happen. Still horrified that things like that happen at all and seem to be happenning a lot more frequently. :(

Put simply it is the flavour of the month, the newshounds are doing their job well too, I mean, it got all of you to come in here and tell me all about something I would never have known about because I live on the other side of the world with my own problems, in my own community, in my own country. Look, it is just sweeping sensationalism at it's best and we all buy into it everyday, a tagline like this latest one makes you think, question and discuss but there are people that will rush to say it isn’t so, like in that article.

There is nothing more to it really, people with Aspergers are not going to be loaded onto buses tomorrow to be taken away to special camps, nor do a select few of us get to go to a special school run by a wheelchair bound bald man, to enhance and utilise our Aspergical talents for the good off all mankind. Tomorrow you will still be you, Aspergers will still be Aspergers and people will still run around shooting other people it seems, not a lot is going to change unfortunately.

The media will also concentrate all their efforts on trying to convince you the next new tragedy is the worst one ever and they will play another angle that makes you fearful and leaves you wanting to find out more. Ever heard the saying that even bad publicity is good publicity?

I have to think that anything that makes people want to find out more about Aspergers will lead them to gain an informed knowledge based in fact ; ]
 
@ Gomendosi: You're a real hoot sometimes: the Cling Wrap Killer?!? that's brilliant! I laughed out loud (doesn't happen often).

I agree that right now there's an outpouring of concern over all things maniacal. In the immediate aftermath of every one of these shootings, society runs about in circles tearing at its hair, asking WHY? WHY? WHY? How can we prevent this? How can we protect ourselves? What motivated the madman? Then, after some news shows, interviews with 'experts' & politicking, everyone gets distracted & goes right back to doing exactly what they were doing before.

Sadly, not a whole heck of a lot will change. The NRA is the most powerful lobby group in the US (Here, it's Mothers Against Drunk Driving & the breast cancer lobby). The culture loves its guns & will make any kind of excuse & apologetic in order to keep them. Mostly, they will use SLOGANS (almost as disturbing in their stupidity as guns are...) Cover your ears, sensitive folks: here comes one of their SLOGANS: GUNS don't kill people: People with GUNS kill people. <---definitely was NOT penned by Confucius!
 
Why not just let the Americans play with their guns, but take away all their ammunition instead? Maybe convert them all into water pistols?
 
Just more rhetoric for the talking heads on the TV. Anything to distract from the fact that no matter what caused him to snap the killer wasn't getting the help he so dearly needed. Maybe when you fear your child is a danger to you and your family you should, I don't know, lock up your guns more securely? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. It's a tragedy and it sucks, but it was the action of a mentally ill man, nothing else.

As for all the people trying to say guns are bad, guns promote killing, and trying to bubblewrap the world... it's lunacy. Sheer lunacy. It isn't protecting anyone, it is making them weaker and MORE vulnerable.

Soup: Yes, we love our guns. Most legal firearms owners have never committed a violent crime, either.
 
I think america as a whole finds it easier to blame the so called "out casts" of society for problems like this than to actually blame their lax laws on guns and their blatant love affair with them. Its like a drug addict blaming society for his habit while he snorts down a line of coke. At the end of the day they have the choice ... make someone a scape goat like the used to with the blacks or actually deal with their problem to make their country a little bit safer.
 
This is good to hear. I wonder how many people will actually read this story instead of automatically assuming that aspies are psychopaths.
