Are you an older adult that feels somewhat marginalized and at times gaslit by medical personnel?

If I may offer a thought Shevek,? have you considered being able to have a Post ibstalled in your upper or lower jaw. as a second mounting point in your mouth? possibly.
Much advertisement down here in the lower 48 , about having entire set of teeth based on these type of posts.. Basically , I think under anethesia, they prep the jaw area and screw in a post into the jawbone. Provider the bone has integrity . You prolly have already looked into this ,but just thought to offer the thought .Please excuse if the information is unwanted .

My husband is in the process of having an implant installed for one of his molars that cracked. It takes about 6-9 months to do the entire procedure. First the tooth has to be pulled, stitches may or may not be required (he needed them), stitches have to be removed after the gum has healed, then a post is installed into the jawbone, and then the fake tooth is attached to the post. Of all the options available, the implant is the best way for him to go.

Fortunately, our dental insurance covers most of the cost because it is not cheap. But Canada has free medical and dental insurance, right?

Thanks. I know about posts, but am looking for something cheaper, not something to use for decades.

Canada's dental insurance is slowly being extended, but it does not cover everything. I'd rather have the money spent on young people.
This year, I had to get some minor surgery to remove a cyst, and the free system was insisting that I prepare for general anesthesia just in case. To them, I was a great opportunity for getting most of the OR team paid for standby. Fifteen years ago, my GP had gotten impatient with the OR staff and just did the procedure in a local office visit. I was already at my limit without the fasting and co-driver, so I eventually paid over $100 to have it done in a private clinic. The new GP refused to add any helpful notes in my file for the next one. The whole saga dominated my life for months.

Everyone I have known who has had this procedure done (2 people) have absolutely LOVED it. It was, however, more than one procedure per tooth. Remove the damaged tooth, heal, place the screw, heal, place the tooth, follow-up. The ‘one day’ advertisements seem to be done in questionable places and I would be scared to trust the bones in my head to superglue and spray paint.

I need a front tooth replaced as well, but I refuse to go in for a cleaning…… so I’ll probably put that off until tomorrow. ;)

Dentist appointments are very triggering for me, l now have to find a new dentist for work my dentist doesn't do.

I'm a young adult but I feel pretty much the same way. I stopped going to doctors - but it's a luxury not everyone can afford, certainly not older adults. They tell you you're making things up either because you're young and "emotionally unstable" or because you're old and "it's aging". Men should toughen up, women are hysterical and children will grow out of it. Case closed. *facepalm*

My expeirence of medical care
is such a nightmare I am pretty sure I am going to choose death rather than ever going back and trying again to find a safe providor....

Because I thought I had found one...and then after years this person started treating me so so badly (escalated slowly and at first I could not see it) I actually ended up filing a formal complaint about them to their regulatory college...

(I expect it will be dismissed for many reasons, most I am not comfortable sharing except for one: I did not understand the directions given on the forms for filing a complaint...and then was told off for following them and given completely opposite directions I didn't understand at all; at first the college reviewer wasn't even going to look at it, but I told them I couldnt do any better and have autism and had nobody to help me figure it out so now they are trying to make sense of what I submitted - but my hopes are not high. Also it won't fix the fact that I don't have a doctor and donn't feel at all safe trying to find another one)

I already have chosen death over medical care a whole bunch of times and got lucky - but really only because of the harm-reduction-style extreme medical-PTSD-accomodating support of my last doctor after they learned of each of the life-threatening situations I refer to (who at the time was an amazing physician....and then became so awful I call their later behaviour "abuse))

There are a lot of not so great stories, but it helps to talk about this and find out we aren't alone.

There are some forum members who are employed by hospitals and give great advice here, so please don't take this personally.
My partner really had poor medical treatment and he just continued not to ask questions to help make better informed decisions. One office refused to schedule him for cataract surgery, l just called a different place and he was scheduled immediately. Two of his doctors never had important labs run on him, and he might have died from this, however his new doctor immediately had him check into ER after his labs came back. I read that has we age, some doctors are just not motivated to really dx our symptoms, but prefer to get us in and out quickly. He had excellent insurance, yet he still was unable to receive critical service.

I just had a dental appointment, and the person was dismissive, refused to ask the dentist about a service l wanted, wouldn't stop pinching my lips, (ugg :(). l read a lot of bad reports of horrible dentists, and companies that just want to fleece you in corporate dentistry land.

What has been your experience?

I do not know about the things you said but you asked what my experience has been. The kindest people I have ever met have all been in heath care. I am not saying of them were. I have had some very bad experiences but I am amazed at the kindness and attention I have been shown.

Once in hospital, in emergency, I waited 12 hours. I was on a gurney and medication. When I was there I was so scared and lonely I posted here to talk about what I was going through. An hour later the surgeon was able to see me and he is the kindest person I have ever met. No one has been nicer to me.

I had a terrible time trying to talk, I was using an iPad. He showed me such compassion and kindness. He talked to me like he would stay with me until I had asked all my questions. No rush at all and I know he was very busy. I do not know how he could do that.

I have had the experience all my life where people feel sorry for me and they change their expression. I know it very well. Suddenly they care for me like I am a child. It feels bad.

The doctor did not do that. He showed me kindness and he never lowered his tone to talk down to me. His patience was real, when I had trouble understanding or talking to him, he did not fidget. I know those signs too. People shift around, they do things with their fingers, I see that a lot. He did not. He stayed still and kept looking at me and waited. I was overwhelmed, I was so happy and grateful.

He even scheduled me for surgery but then talked to me later and had an idea that I could avoid it. If he had not tried at that last moment I would have had the surgery and it is one of the most painful things I have had, I did it once before. His hope turned out right, I was able to avoid it. He saved me from it. If his job is to operate, why help me avoid being operated on by him? He was there to help me and if surgery would then that, but he only wanted me better.

I remember a nurse before a surgery who was so kind I never forget him. Others too. A dentist.

My current GP (General Practitioner) is not very nice and warm but she is excellent. She never misses anything, not the smallest thing. I wish she were nicer but I think she gives me the best medical care.

So many examples of kindness I have had.

The bad experiences are very bad but rarer.

Oh, I do not know if this is still on subject but when my dentist sold his practice he asked to see me outside and he told me before he told the staff even that he had sold it and he told me he made it a condition of the sale that the new dentist keep me as a patient.

My usual experience with high-functioning ASD and healthcare providers is general disbelief. I’m 50, 6’2”, and have a normal life/family/career. Since I appear normal, I must be lying or wrong. It’s not until they witness a full blown meltdown, crying so hard that I cannot breathe, that there’s a look of at least confusion in their eyes. Ironically, I need to refuse medication at least once to get them to offer some sort of sympathy. Not always of course, but far too often.

Most just want me gone quickly. Make their money and move onto the next.

There’s a lot of people who lie for drugs or free services. Even the best doctors eventually get tired of believing so many fakers that I just sound like somebody who doesn’t want to go to work. It’s like the people who claim their dog is an ‘emotional support animal’ so that they can bring Sprinkles into the grocery store. The legitimate, registered animals are so outnumbered by the family pets being walked on a leash through the cereal aisle that nobody believes when Fluffy is a true medical necessity.
