Are you a grammar nazi?

Hmmm, this is a tricky one. I suppose I could be called a grammar 'nazi', but really I have a love for editing. Editing is my obsession, rather than correcting people or trying to control their communication. That's why I decided to get out of working in magazines and start my own editing business (that and working with people, well, y'know...). Also, I am quite capable of making mistakes as well, I don't know anyone who hasn't made a grammatical error at some point. I do have to stop myself from correcting the posters on the wall at my kids' school though...
 
I'm the opposite of a Grammar Nazi; I'm highly creative. Let editors do their jobs...creative people need ideas and freedom to create.

I agree completely :) I'm a writer as well as an editor, and I can't for the life of me edit my own work, it just doesn't mix...

The way that always worked for me in college was to proofread the paper backwards. Of course back then it was always on paper too.

I understand the love/need for order and structure that can be found in correct grammar and that incorrect grammar could be a source of offence and dicomfort to some but my brain is pretty pants at learning and retaining alot of the rules of grammar, so i could never be a grammar nazi. I prefer numbers or better still, shapes and colour.

lol, It was not my intention. Are the errors connected to where i put the commas? I have always been confused by commas. :confused:

Re-reading your post, you only made a couple. You forgot to capitalize I and Nazi.

Commas confuse me too.
 
Grammar is my life. I want to be an editor (hence my avatar), and I definitely have the skills for it. I'm just worried about college, because I think one needs to major in English if he/she wants to edit books and not newspapers, and English and literature require a lot of inferring and critical thinking, neither of which I am very good at. I find typos everywhere I go, and it makes me infuriated to see that they were not caught by the editors, and that I might not get the job that was made for me.

Anyway, sorry about that. It's just my major worry right now. Yes, I like grammar. Some things that are done frequently and greatly annoy me are: "Woah" instead of "Whoa," "i.e." instead of "e.g." (oddly, I rarely see "e.g." when "i.e." should be used), "everyday" when it should be "every day," and the standard your/you're, there/their/they're, it's/its, etc.

And I use the Oxford comma as well. Not using it will only lead to confusion. I wasn't allowed to use it in Newspaper class, which was hard to overcome.

I am also a devotee of the Oxford comma :)
 
I'm not a grammar Nazi, however I cannot stand it when people use bad grammar. It kind of 'pains' me when I have to listen to it. It has nothing to do with the person, it just really hurts my ears. The thing that bothers me the most is when people use an 'a' in front of a noun when it's supposed to be an 'an'. I'll get really uncomfortable and my body's reaction is similar to that of someone scratching down a chalkboard. I don't know why it bothers me so much though...
 
I used to be a grammar nazi until I developed cognitive problems from lyme disease. Now I just pay attention to the meaning of the message.
 
I feel you all! I am a grammar Nazi for sure, and a hardcore editor. I see errors everywhere, in English and in Spanish especially! I just ignore it, because most NTs hate grammar Nazis...except when they need an editor ;)
