Anyone Played/Play On Second Life?

I have been there for about 6 years now, on and off. Initially, it was definitely an obsession and I practically lived there and forgot about my 'first life'.
I still find it fascinating, even though it might seem primitive graphically, compared to PC and console games (in fact, it is a virtual reality anyway, rather than a game)

Though the entire notion of online "games" such as second life, but similarly World of Warcraft; for some reason I can't get into these things. After 30 minutes I need a break already cause it doesn't interest me enough. Perhaps it's a good thing, cause I could see myself getting immersed in such worlds easily otherwise.

Yes, my aspie ex has become pretty immersed there, but only one on aspect... a roleplaying sim based on the film Avatar. That is the only part of Second Life he is involved in. For me, I enjoy exploring, going to the live concerts there, the art installations and sometimes, I manage to pick up a few virtual friends along the way. It is very expansive and has recently moved over to mesh, so everything is a lot more real. I suppose I also like being able to be anything I want there, from a horse to an android to a tiger to a doll etc.

Perhaps in a sense I'm too down to earth for it. I have no real desire to be something else. And the exploring part; I'll visit the forest here for that... heh.

Not saying it's wrong to do it in SL, it's just something that for such reasons doesn't really connect to me (heck; even roleplaying doesn't work for me, and with that I'm talking about the Dungeons and Dragons type thing, lol).

That's hysterical! I always wondered about that cause it is supposed to be pretty realistic. Hey! It would be a good way to get all the Aspies here together. That would be kinda fun come to think of it.

There are quite a few aspies already there, because it is an easier way to interact. I mean, you can dance and other such things there, and go to clubs without having to actually deal with the real life issues that come with that.

There are also various groups in world, that have meetings and the such, so yes, it could potentially be quite interesting and fun to meet people that way.

It is free. Only costs come if you decide you want to shop for better clothing, hair, skins etc than you get with your initial avatar, or if you want to rent land/a house, furnish etc etc. It is free to explore, go to concerts, go to clubs etc etc. Some get in world jobs to make some game money. There are also hunts where you go round in world shops and hunt for an item which contains free gifts like skin, clothes, hair, furniture etc. Plenty of people never spend anything in there.

I have spent a lot, personally, as I wanted lots of different avatars, rent a home or land there, love decorating and well, the shopping gets a bit addictive once you see all the gowns and victorian clothing etc.

I tried it twice before - once at college as part of my course and once at home.
Wasn't really that fussed during college and at home, my computer wasn't fast enough to run it smoothly - it was jerking really badly.

It's not bad overall and the bit where you can fly around is a nice touch, but not really enough to keep me interested. Also, like King_Oni, I didn't make any friends on it either.

IMVU was a copy I think and I seem to remember that game a little more than Second Life, well whatever game I was a vampire in ...

I wonder if there's an installer or port to Linux version of SL ?:/

I've heard of it and one of my buddies made their webcomic with screen shots of Second Life, but I never tried playing it. I preferred RuneScape as my free MMO.

There are several interactive vampire things in Secondlife, the best known being Bloodlines. Also numerous roleplaying sims too for vampires. In fact, I think there must be a roleplaying sim there for just about anything you can think of.

I am not sure, I imagine there may well be a linux version as there are a LOT of third party viewers for it now, the best known being Firestorm.

I hated IMVU, that is more just a social platform whereas Second Life is more of a creative platform as well as social since everything in it is created by those using it.

Oh yes, there is huge Victorian and also Steampunk base in Second Life. Lot of shops, groups, events and roleplaying areas all devoted to Victorian, lol.

OK! I did it finally! I joined Second Life. I visited once and have an avatar that looks pretty much like me surprisingly - except with bigger boobs. Anyway, most of the other avatar people there weren't really friendly. I had a few conversations, bought a few non-cost items and that was it. I even ended up getting a receipt for these items in my email like Amazon! I was like wth? The bottom line is I have no idea what I'm doing so I got "Second Life for Dummies" and I'm breaking it open tonight before bed. I don't want this to become an addiction - I do have an addictive personality. I found some medical buildings too! I need to see how the money works and if I can find a nursing job of some sort cause I'd like to get a house. What the heck am I saying?! This all sounds too insane!

Seems like a combination of "The Sims" and MTV's "Catfish". Mildly amusing as long as no one attempts to seriously use it as a platform for making real social contacts outside the parameters of the simulation itself.

I'm suddenly reminded of the role Tom Hanks had in a film called "Mazes and Monsters". Major buzzkill.

Old thread here, but still will respond. Yes, I am familiar with SL. There are places for people who are disabled (I help those who are 24/7 bed bound) to socialize. There is even an Autism/Aspie support group there.

Just like anything else, what you put into it, is what you get out of it.
