I may have posted something like this earlier, but only vaguely recalled it after typing this post, so I'm posting it anyway.
Fragile X syndrome
I think this is irresponsible.
They say that Fragile X Syndrome is "one of the few known causes of autism", and then they cite numbers that don't add up.
"Fragil X affects between 12 000 and 15 000 people in the UK." Going by the "1%" statistic that we used to assume to be the rate of autism, there are about 650 000 autistics in the UK. That means roughly 2.5% of autistics can also have Fragile X Syndrome. (Strictly less – 15 000 is 2.5% of 600 000.)
That is hardly statistically significant as it is.
Now, this page: Autism and Fragile X Syndrome - National Fragile X Foundation
…says that between 15% and 33% (or between one sixth and one third) of people with FXS also have autism. So at most five thousand people with FXS have autism, making the real percentage of correlation between the two 0.77%. (500 000 divided by 650 000.)
And it also says that between 2% and 6% of children with Autism have FXS, which is simply not true by its own admission. It's on the same page!
Keep in mind that this assumes that autism is in approximately 1% of the population. If our numbers are significantly fewer than that, we have obviously been lied to by someone else entirely.
If FXS was a form of autism, or caused autism, then all FXSers would have autism. They don't. If they have similar symptoms, or whatever, then great, but lying with numbers is still wrong.
