Well... at one point it became a goal in it self to get a perfect 100% on steam for the one game this year :) And obvious which months I had other things on my mind :) anyone else having some interesting statistics for this year?

Rimworld.webp

There are a couple of us on this forum that had previous experience, in quality engineering. I used my knowledge. to follow covid, put the data on this forum daily as it ran its course, currently use it to follow my health.

Can you elaborate a bit on what you are monitoring regarding your health? - I'm not asking for specific data, just like the type of data.... I'm interested as I have a past working with telemedicine.

Mine's a little botched because I used one of those card idlers earlier on in the year, but the taste profile still checks out. Anything that looks like it's not really a game and is just covert software is probably a legit entry, lol.

Also, anyone doing switch this year?

Mine's kind of ruined with gamedev tools and games I play with my family, but underneath the rubble there's some MC, Factorio and Junk Jack in there. Probably some of my actual favorites that I don't play enough.

For a second I thought you got 100% achievements on a game with no achievements :D

I kind of wish I played more Rimworld and Factorio this year, although I racked up some hours on the latter one on Switch. I need to get my gaming priorities straight, and just pick a few good ones to go back to.

I'm super curious about your stats, but I can't quite understand. (I love seeing data about our personal habits collected over time).

Could you explain what this means? What does getting 100% mean about that month?

I think my Switch was like, I did some Factorio, and... okay I have no idea what else.

Honestly I barely use the thing. It's the most irritating to set up console I've ever owned, for one thing... really not fond of the dumb thing. Wish it was JUST a console, not the bizarro hybrid gizmo that it is.

I probably would use something like that Garage app... if it was actually possible to trade/upload games WITHIN the app itself. But Nintendo. So no. I miss LittleBigPlanet. I wish something like that would come to Steam, or just freaking anywhere on PC, but I digress...

I at least used the pro controller for awhile, but that was on the PC while the Switch itself rotted in some corner. And then that controller got dumped (and lost) the moment I got my hands on an Xbox controller (aka, best controller I've ever used). Come to think of it, I dont know where the Switch went either.

It occurs to me suddenly that with Factorio supporting controllers on PC now, the Switch effectively has no function. I dont like most of Nintendo's first party games, particularly Zelda after it got on the Ubisoft train.

So I guess that's my stats: Factorio happened but wont happen again and there's a high percentage chance of selling the whole thing.

Me too, I enjoy researching statistics as well. It gives me the aspie tingles.

Good metrics to monitor, especially over time :)

It's 100% of my play time over the whole year, i.e. it has been the only game I played on steam in 2023 :)
My doctor mentioned monitoring my blood pressure before the stroke. More age than any particular risk and then it happened. Based on my investigation suspect it was covid, my sister brought it back from business trip from New York, November 1019. she mentioned to me that she had gotten sick while I was in hospital, I was unaware of the beginning of this as the hospital was just gearing up for the onslaught.

I think they allow you to share a code for each of those (Fuze4, SmileBASIC, GBG) so that other people can download them, and from what I can tell this doesn't require the online service or anything like that. Unless you're talking about another snag that I missed along the way.

The only one that kind of sucks is Smile, because you apparently need to purchase "tickets" in order to use their upload juices, so getting your hands on some good example code is a little harder than it should be. They all seem to have built-in manuals though, which definitely makes things feel like a decent 'fantasy console' of sorts, and you rarely find yourself googling much unless you're looking for some kind of pseudo-OOP workarounds.

It's a bit crazy what people can do with GBG, though. There's definitely a hardcore tier to that one that's way harder than just writing some code, and people have Arduino scripts that paint in JPGs and all sorts of crazy things happening. If you ever get into any of those, I might be able to help you get up and running at least :D

Whoa, I was kind of wondering if they'd ever do this. It seems like most of us picked up the Switch version so we could finally sit back and try to memorize all the button combinations and modifiers, especially since at the time they had no intentions of supporting controllers on PC. That definitely seems like a great added feature, but it always seems weird when they make you think, "Why did I buy this twice, then?".

Outside of the coding / noding and art stuff, I'm 99% sure every purchase has been a duplicate for smooth controller support for me. I wonder how many people like that are keeping the system afloat :D

Mostly for GBG the code thing *is* the snag.

With something like Mario Maker or LittleBigPlanet, you'd make a thing, upload it, and anyone could get it by just browsing without leaving the app, or heck, just by hitting "random" and pressing go. If they found a level they wanted to try on Youtube or something, a simple search in-game with the level or user name would do.

But the codes are convoluted on a very special level that I've only ever seen Nintendo fart out. It actually takes MORE effort to use them than it does to do... literally any other bloody method. I mean good grief, it's like inputting bad passwords to reload Metroid in the NES era all over again, except drastically stupider. Metroid at least had an excuse, it was a super early NES game. There is no excuse now though. Except Nintendo being lame as ever.

And with something like GBG, that means that nothing gets noticed without going to a lot of trouble (because there's no browser in game or random level/whatever function), and then the USER has to go through the massive derp of dealing with those dumb codes. A lot of people simply wont bother, which as usual is a thing Nintendo doesnt grasp. Stuck in the stone age when it comes to online functionality, as always. All these years and they STILL dont get how to internet. It'd be impressive if it wasnt so pathetic. It's one of the reasons I dont use the console. I mean, Smash Bros, right? Could be super fun played online. But actually playing it that way, you hit a button, and then you can get up, go get a coffee, come back, and wait another minute before your character punches. There's no lag like Nintendo lag. Ya cant even hook an ethernet cable up to it.

As it is, with stuff that allows for content making, I tend towards extreme complexity. With the first LittleBigPlanet, I made all these giant boss things, which were almost too much for the game to handle (I actually had it start spawning floating error messages once) and were powered by enormous arrays of weird "circuitry" (and this was before the series had logic gates built in, so I was just winging that part). Darned things could take days or a couple of weeks to make. Particularly the first one, three weeks if I recall.

The idea of that thing (or any of them) NOT being noticed after all that effort would have made me just give up immediately. It did get noticed though, and got a heck of a lot of attention. Same with most things I made. But there's no bloody way that would happen with GBG. Heck, I wouldnt want to play creations made by other users either. Always freaking loathed dealing with those ancient passwords way back when. I aint doing that nonsense again. Not on something that isnt a retro game.

It's really the same with all the other game making/coding sorts of things on there. On PC? Oh sure, I'd be happy to try things. And then just drop them onto Itch if I complete something. Itch is great for that. But the Switch? Codes, so... nope.

Did I mention I miss LittleBigPlanet? The ol' PS3, whole reason I bought that console.

As for Factorio, yeah, the controller thing is a fairly recent update... it took them quite awhile to do it. But it's there now! Glad for that, I outright cant play it without the controller (cant use a mouse for gaming, wrecks my arm). So that means now controller support AND mod support! Together at last!

Yeah, unfortunately that definitely is the way it goes. I think I only ever went hunting for GBG projects one time on Reddit or Discord and the responses were pretty sparse. It seemed like nobody was really touching any of the codes or playing anyone else's games much, but then again I sort of get that feeling about fantasy consoles in general as well, even though a few games (like Celeste, of course!) actually gained some popularity.

Oddly, despite the hurdles and terrible quirks I still love having a dedicated system where I can't easily look up a solution with ChatGPT, so I guess having almost no incentive to go hunting for Fuze codes helps me work out those mental snags instead of doing things the lazy way. I think I posted this in the other tech thread, but if I had the money I'd pick up some of these newer C64 clone systems just for that hyperfocus-factor and being able to firmly plant myself away from getting sidetracked with surfing the internet or whatever else gets in the way, but they're even more expensive than a Switch .
