    Autism IS a Disability

I understand why it can be easy to balk at the term. I did for many years, out of a mixture of pride and fear of being different. Admitting it has helped me be more at peace. It's made me reach out for support that is there ready and waiting, instead of being stubborn. Getting that didn't make...

    School Report Card

Can relate, plenty of commendation and high levels on the academic front but never high level for anything to do with conduct/participation in class. 'Needs to speak more' was a constant feature from every single teacher. And I can see how, as a teacher, having an unresponsive student can be...

    Clumsiness

Can attest to this, my proprioception is awful. In my last house I had an attic room but it was like the concept of a sloped ceiling was new to my brain every time I went near the window, I was always managing to hit my head on it. (Also hope this isn't TMI for others here, but as a cis woman...

    Sweet Stuff

Definitely another one with a sweet tooth here - which flips between things like soft sweets e.g gummies/hard-boiled and then chocolate-based treats - and one I have a constant battle of wills with. I don't eat it everyday but will abstain for a period of time and then consume a lot - yeah I...

    Constipation

I had major toilet issues with this as a child, and according to my doctor at the time it can be a common problem for young children with autism, but it's no more severe than in a neurotypical child - it's more likely to stem from anxiety or fear/trauma, or even learned behaviour. I continue to...

Do you have emotional spells at times?

I do, and often have difficulty processing whether it's an overload or burnout, or co-morbid related (depression spiral, unknown trigger anxiety attack, etc). The former is much harder to come out of and doesn't benefit -at least in my experience- from the usual help given for depressive spells...

Do you ever get told you don't ask enough questions?

Again, I feel like I could have written this, and I'm pleased it's not just me who struggles with this :relieved:

Do you ever get told you don't ask enough questions?

Exactly this (which I've bolded). This issue wouldn't be an issue at all had my NT family not made it giant issue. I love them to bits but we do end up falling out regularly because of frankly inconsequential things like this.

Do you ever get told you don't ask enough questions?

This sounds like so many conversations I have also had, to be honest. And some of the time it's been brought to my attention that I needed 'x' piece of information but didn't in fact ask (or I forgot to, which also happens). But in other situations it's like...I didn't feel as if I needed to...

    Autism and Driving

I don't, but I can't say that I haven't given it a go. I face a conflict because when I'm not overthinking or overstimulated by the many things to think about, I mostly enjoyed the process as well as the independence and sense of achievement it gave me. I'm at a crossroads where I'm not sure...

Do you ever get told you don't ask enough questions?

Or perhaps this should be more accurately phrased as 'do you ever get told you don't ask the right questions' I do, and feel like this is a daily occurrence in my home. It will either be in a group conversation (on zoom or other platforms right now obviously, but previously too) and be told...

aspie was told she was brain damaged

I wasn't even aware that she was autistic! The comment is real grim but look what a success she has been. You prove 'em wrong, Susan ;)

Do you have others friends who are autistic?

I do, and interestingly none of them are what you would consider a 'peer'. And all are in the same faith as me, which is nice. Additionally, 2 out of 4 of them were diagnosed (3 ASD-1, the other dude more ASD-2) way into their adult life (over 50) One of these people is my 'adopted' grandfather...

The ultimate cure for Anxiety, cat islsnd.

haha, I'm actually way more of a cat person but that is funny  (I get to draw way more dogs than cats) Looks like Japan has an island for anything, in any case

The ultimate cure for Anxiety, cat islsnd.

I agree! I love this, one of the many Japan youtubers I follow has been here. I think the place is called Tashirojima? Sadly all the mostly elderly residents are dying and at this rate the island will have no-one to care for them. In any case a purfect place to go after travel bans have been...
