    What are your current obsessions?

My current obsession is, ditzy as it is, Harry Potter fanfiction. Thankfully, though, I'm a very picky reader, so I don't find very many fics that meet my standards. But when I do, it's usually very, very good. I was obsessed with certain characters right after the last movie came out, and then...

    What are your sensory issues?

Hmm. I read that synesthesia is really common among autism spectrum people... does anyone else have it? I also have bad direction perception, in that if someone calls my name, I usually have a very rough idea of where it's coming from, but that sense can easily be confused, especially if I'm...

    What are your sensory issues?

I hate balloons popping as well, even if I know it's going to happen. Actually, it's worse then, because I know I won't be able to control my reaction to the loud, sudden noise. If I pretend I don't see someone preparing to pop it, I stay tensed to flinch but at least my startled-ness makes...

    The Tragedie of the Aspies

Madness Man: No! It is me! I prophesy in my spare time... a man's gotta make money in this world, you know.

When did you stop believing in Santa?

I figured it out when I was about six... logic dictated that there was no way Santa could deliver presents to the entire world in one night, and our house's chimney, I knew for a fact, was stoppered. Also, when I saw presents with the tag saying "Santa", it was in my mother's handwriting. Plus...

    The Tragedie of the Aspies

Madness Man: I am this Madness Man. You mean there are others?

Hmm. Actually, I feel the opposite way - I feel the subtitles distract me from the nuances of behavior the characters exhibit. Subtitles do help if I happen to miss something someone said because they're talking too fast or have an accent, but generally I like to focus on behavior and expression...

Yes, exactly. And personally, I find the subtlety and variety of language's phrasing (even if it occasionally turns on me, in spoken language - damn innuendos) the most fascinating part about it.

Sorry, I was confusing prosody with connotation in written language. Whoops. Well, what I was focusing on was how, with complete sentences, one could deliver subtle irony, sarcasm, or other things that probably wouldn't be able to be conveyed with only content words, no matter stress or intonation.

Yes, I think so as well. It's a pity, because then prosody will have almost no major use - it's still present in written language, but not to such an extent and with so many variations. Thank you. I haven't successfully learned it yet - after all, there are thousands of words to learn, and I'm...

I agree about spoken language as well - it does have uses that will never die out. It's also interesting to remark how correct grammar is less and less relied upon in spoken English, while it is in written English. One can perhaps imagine a day when spoken English has degenerated into presenting...

    Do You Hold Grudges?

Actually, a relevant scenario for this thread came up recently. In eighth grade my group of friends and I (but mostly I) were quite irritatingly bullied consistently by a group of seventh graders. This highly exacerbated my Aspie traits, which only perpetuated the cycle. Recently, before...

    Stammering when stressed

Actually, sometimes it takes me so long to craft a suitably funny joke that the conversation (especially a swift-paced, spur-of-the-moment conversation between teenagers) moves on to another topic, and my joke is useless. To remedy this, I often try to just say whatever funny phrase comes into...

    Stammering when stressed

Actually, that happens to me a lot. As it is, I don't answer a question until I'm absolutely sure of the answer. However, in class, I'm more fine with giving an answer that's a half-constructed sentence; the teacher's used to me either just saying the key words or giving a long-winded answer...

    Stammering when stressed

I do sometimes have that problem, since I usually revise a sentence in my mind two or three times for maximum effect before I say it (especially in a humorous conversation), and during that revision I sort of turn off my eyes. But nowadays I'm careful to position my eyes to be staring off into...
