  • I find it bizarre that bubbly, happy teenage girls die horribly from cancer by 18, yet those who would welcome an early, natural death have to either live long, healthy lives or make a noose from a belt and hope it works as intended.

I found a place to collect acorns too. Acorns have to "cure" over the winter though.

After they are cured are the acorns for eating?
    oregano
    oregano
Yes. The acorns have to be shelled, then the nutmeat is smashed into a powder (pre-colonization this was done with mortar and pestle, today it's with a blender) then the powder is mixed with water and boiled until the bitter "tannin" is leached out.
Will climate change eventually turn the (former by then) USA into a land of wandering nomadic hunter gatherers? Next year the state will likely resume selling civilian fishing licenses for the Klamath River. Yummy salmon.

I see the USA descending into a brutal monarchy where anybody who says anything bad about the king is immediately put to death.

Monarchy? Not really. Look at Hungary under Orban, Russia under Putin. More like authoritarian semi-dictatorship. Our dictator is nowhere near as smart as those two men though.
LOL The so-called local "property owner's association" only contacts me once a year to demand a yearly "fee". It's not too much money and for the other 364 days a year they are invisible. Hey, if I have to pay protection money, fine as long as you don't try to micromanage me.

That's about all they do. The subdivision is quite remote so there isn't any reason to fear severed horse heads. I also don't know if anybody is willing to push us around out here-the residents are not only very independent but very armed as well.

Everybody owns their own land, this isn't a mobile home park where some big corporation owns everything. Everybody pays their own property taxes and is responsible for their individual parcel.

All the houses we owned, none had HOAs. But that was in MN. Everything in FL has a HOA attached to it.
I have been mildly heat sick for the past couple days. It is difficult to keep my little house cool, and I have to run the AC on a generator. Even worse fire warnings on the weather radio kept waking me up yesterday evening. (A line of thunderstorms came through.)

I'm sorry, hot weather is the worst. If your area has low humidity a mist fan works wonders. I used to collect ice packs and hug them to sleep

Ice packs can really bring down my temperature, place on my neck, or inside wrist, or even on my scalp to cool my body.

When you say you have to run the AC on a generator, are you literally pumping electricity with a hand generator into the AC?

I was at a Spencer's store for once in however long, and they have autism shirts, stickers and mugs in there, all akin this kind of humor for us. They're great.

I remember Spencers as the place where you went to buy adult items, not porn per se but items couples used in their bedroom lives. Spencers was mall oriented and I assumed they had died out with the indoor mall format.

In fact, it was at an outlet mall. Tanger's...as they are called around here.

Somebody here actually has an account with Yreka Transfer, the local garbage hauler. There are two 90 gallon garbage cans getting blown around by the wind along the main road where the turnoff is. They doubled down on stupid and put a few things out that Transfer won't take since they're not in the cans.

I don't need your civil war / It feeds the rich while it buries the poor / Your power hungry selling soldiers in a human grocery store, ain't that fresh?
I am hoping to get potatoes in the ground this year. I have already mowed and raked the garden plot so tomorrow I will get the garden claw and rip up the soil, then use the hoe and make the rows. Then I will order the seed potatoes. Volcanic soil apparently is good for root veggies, but I only have 6 inches or so of soil.
I got yet another jury duty summons. No matter what I do I keep getting tracked down, over and over. The American "justice" system is a cruel joke and I hate it, but they keep trying to force me to participate. Buzz off!

LOL...reminds me of watching prospective jurors behave like asses directly to the judge. Used to be the fastest way to avoid serving.

LOL one time the court rejected all my excuses and I had to wait in the courtroom to be questioned by the judge. One guy said he had a huge project due at work and couldn't step away from it. When the judge ignored that, he ranted incoherently until he was dismissed.

The psych sent me a draft of the excuse letter for approval. My diagnosis is: 1) depressive type schizoaffective disorder and 2)unspecified obsessive compulsive disorder/. A court will see "schizo" and run away screaming. All I have to do is present it to the jury clerks.

Sadly I will have to cut it down soon due to local fire prevention regulations. I have a mower that doesn't use a motor of any kind, because powered lawn equipment hits the rocks here and sparks, which has caused numerous fires over the years.
Tomorrow I am headed to Seaside, Oregon, to peruse the ham radio flea market at the ARRL Northwestern US convention. I don't have an ARRL membership so I'm not going to anything except the flea market, which doesn't require it. SEA-PAC

Spectacular. The chain of Cascades volcanoes are imposing. A while back I was doing work on the Pacific Crest Trail on Mount Hood and backpacked around it. Depending where we were I could see the Three Sisters to the South and Mount Adams to the North. The view of Mount Saint Helens and its blasted peak was impressive.

On Mt. Hood, I started and ended at Timberline Lodge, the external shots in The Shining, and stayed there. It is another grand gift by the CCC (my father was in the CCC) which did so much for us.

I was there in July. It was a welcome stay after a week of Backpacking. We did have snowfields to cross and streams to ford. One day we hiked up Yokum Ridge and watched house-sized chunks of ice fall down. The man who supplied the massive Ponderosa Pine pillars in Timberline Lodge was paid $25 each.
California golden poppies growing wild near my home, 20 May. This is the official state flower and picking or otherwise harming them is actually a felony under CA law.

And don't forget pumping water by hand. In the 1940s "running water" was piped into the kitchen, consisting of a sink with a small indoor hand pump attached.

No, of course not. That is the home of one of the first homesteaders in Oregon's Rogue Valley, built in 1870. It is now a museum that is only open 4 days a year, mainly in fall. I live in Siskiyou County, California.
