    Dueling Diagnoses

Hi Folks, I kinda fell off the Earth for a long time. Or at least this forum. During some of that time I have been thinking about what being on the spectrum means, and I don't think I get it yet. But I do see why someone might look at my life and think I'm on the spectrum. On the other hand, it...

As One on the Autism Spectrum, Do You Have Barriers that Seem to Stop You?

I am still trying to work things out, but there have been barriers in my life that have been difficult. When i was in my 20's and 30's, I could not make a habit of paying the bills. Even if I had money. So several times a year I would get one of my utilities shut off. Trying to sit down and...

    an eye contact contract?

Points I haven't seen elsewhere in the thread. Not looking at someone when they are talking to you is considered rude, at least in the US. So it may be that people you don't make eye contact with consider you rude rather then deceptive or shameful. There is probably some non-verbal stuff going...

    Outside the Herd

I think I have had a similar experience. In my professional career I have worked in companies with a lot of immigrants to the USA. We are all weird. Many are weird because they live and work in a country they did not grow up in. So how can they tell I am a weird American? All Americans are weird...

    Low comprehension

Maybe it is a multitasking problem. Dealing with a novel question requires several tasks inside you head. Connecting the speech to the symbols for their meaning, formulating a novel response, speaking the response. Here is a kicker, you also have to think about how to express the response...

Is there a ND sleeping habit?

Yeah sleep issues are no joke. Nice link. I know when I have to get a sleep study for the CPAP machine, it is the worst night of sleep I get outside of full on insomnia.

Is there a ND sleeping habit?

I don't have the staying asleep issue as bad as you. When i started Welbutrin, it would sometimes cause me to wake up and not be able to go to sleep again. I also have sleep apnea. Do you snore?

    Are these Stims?

I had to think about this for a bit. I think no I can't do it with little thought. When i am doing it I am not thinking about the steps, but I am watching what is happening. If someone were to speak to me and I needed to pay attention, I would have to stop with the pen.

    Are these Stims?

I haven't done this recently, but for a while when I was sitting at meetings I would take apart my pen and put it back together again. I would do this over and over again. Sometimes I would quit, only to start again in a few minutes. Would this be like stimming? How do you feel when you are...

Is there a ND sleeping habit?

So I can only sleep in one of two positions. I sleep on my stomach with one leg sticking out at an angle. I hold a pillow under my arm on the side that the leg is sticking out. It doesn't have to be a particular pillow, but I have one I have beaten into shape over the years that I prefer. The...

Are there distinct stages people go through after diagnosis?

I was recently told by my psychiatrist. I am 47. There has never been a hint of this before despite seeing a number of mental health professionals back in my 30s. Right now I am dealing with denial. It doesn't make sense. But I also realize I don't have enough information for it to not make...

Figurative Language (you can bet your bootie)

This one is metaphorical. The glass house stands in for a fragile or delicate social position. Throwing stones means disparaging someone else. If you had really bad taste in clothes and made fun of someone else for bad taste in clothes, It would only point out to the people listening your own...

    Convenience Store Woman

That is fun to think about. Maybe someone whose interest in you is based soley on your role as a customer. She will greet you warmly and take your money, but has no other interest in you. It might be terrible if that was your mom.

    Convenience Store Woman

I liked it on the whole. But I am new to aspergers/autism and did not know if this was a description of it or not.

    Convenience Store Woman

I am sitting here laughing. I posted the link so folks would know which book I meant. There is more than one by that title. It didn't occur to me to read the reviews there.
