When to tell potential date that you're Autistic?

I feel that's information that I personally wouldn't share until I can truly trust the person. Trust is huge for me. If I can trust you, I will start to open up about the way I experience the world, without fear of judgment.

Cooking, are you good or do you suck at it?

I can't follow recipes. Too many steps and I get anxious. So I don't cook.

    Do you believe in IQ?

Yes. I am a special education teacher and IQ helps determine a student's classification which in turn helps identify necessary accommodations and placement for school. It's just ONE measure, but an important one in my experience. I feel in a school that does it right, IQ is used to determine...

does the diagnosis really explain anything at all?

I don't always understand things as stated. But people sometimes just need the diagnosis to find appropriate services and help. If you aren't diagnosed, you don't get the help or accommodations. Maybe it does nothing for you in terms of learning about yourself, but gives you access to a world of...

    Special interest

I am a special education teacher. My work can be stressful at times, but I love it. I think about new lesson ideas as I fall asleep! But I have not successfully learned how to transition from the school setting to the home setting after work/during school breaks. I become extremely depressed and...

    Daily living tasks/independence

I appreciate this reply. I have not heard of executive functioning, but am glad I can attach a new term to this. Forming new habits is hard for me, as my brain cannot figure out the steps for tasks without feeling completely overwhelmed. Maybe use your idea of a checklist, but break it down into...

    Special interest

It seems I know very little about autism, other than what I experience. My doctor, I trust. But special interests are talked about a lot and I may not fit that category. I clearly fit other categories though. Maybe make an appointment with my doctor to discuss his findings further so I can...

    Special interest

I am in love with my job and dont want another interest. That is why I think I am depressed when I get home and can't do anything. I stay at work the latest I can and get there as early as I can. I love it. Maybe thats my special interest? Can a job be a special interest?

does the diagnosis really explain anything at all?

My diagnosis gave me a lot of clarity. For example, I used to be very oblivious to how other people felt and how my actions or words could effect them. People at my work generally disliked me because I was unaware of my behavior and social rules. I had no idea I was messing up socially until I...

    Special interest

I'm diagnosed with autism, but I dont have a special interest. I dont have any interests. I go to my job then I come home and sleep, I do nothing in between, as it gives me a great deal of anxiety. On weekends, I sit and look on my phone. I do nothing. It's a sad life, but I think it's my...

    Daily living tasks/independence

Anyone here have trouble with just doing daily living tasks (brushing teeth, taking a shower, washing face, cooking, cleaning, etc.). I want to be more independent but there seems to be a block for me... Hoping someone can relate so I don't feel so alone and stupid.

Autism and being successful at work

"It's important for us to identify the actual things that are giving us stress in our jobs and work at reducing or eliminating those things if possible. If certain things are impossible to change, then it's possible a job change might be required." This is very true. Im trying to eliminate or...

Autism and being successful at work

Thank you for your reply. Anxiety is a huge issue for me. Something I continuously work on. Before I went out on leave, I did not understand my colleagues. I didn't know what they were thinking or feeling or how my actions might effect them. I had a great deal problem with humor, and this was a...

Autism and being successful at work

Thank you for the reply back! I am asking for a mentor who has knowledge of adults with autism, weekly check ins with a supervisor, and a quiet space for lunch. I'm thinking between a mentor and a supervisor, I will have enough eyes on me that if I get confused or overwhelmed with the social...
