    Asperger's and childish behavior

There's a tendency for a lot of teenagers and especially pre-teens to want to shun "childish" things because of peer pressure to be cool and grown up. It's not that kid stuff has become boring; it's that they have to openly hate it in order to fit in. I feel like a lot of aspies just plain don't...

Do you ever just not care?

I think aspies tend to have trouble with perceptive empathy (i.e. being able to identify what others are feeling) and maybe predictive empathy (i.e. being able to predict what someone will feel if a certain thing happens), but are pretty similar to the general population in terms of caring...

    How´s your sense of direction?

My friends seemed to think my idea of taking a compass to the Renaissance Festival was silly, so I get the impression my sense of direction is worse than theirs.

    Pacing back and forth

I used to walk around a lot (sometimes I'd go to fast and bump into a wall and my parents would be alarmed), but then I injured my foot :( and for the last two years, pacing is painful and I do it much less. Sometimes I still can't resist.

Do You Hide Your Intelligence When You Meet "Normal" People?

I haven't needed too. Possibly I'm not that intelligent :p In elementary school some other kids gave me crap about being in the "extended learning program" but I didn't understand it at the time, and there wouldn't have been much I could do anyway.

    what is your stim?

Normal stims: leg wiggling, chewing inside of my cheeks, chewing my fingers, rocking forward, and I think overeating counts.... When I'm stressed: low-pitched monotone hum, chewing my chewable necklace, headphones with loud music, or foam earplugs that put pressure inside my ears Extreme...

Being Female and on the Spectrum - Social Problems With Other Females

I've become surprisingly popular among my mostly-female workplace. I think part of it is that I lucked into a good environment. But just in case my actions have made a difference, I'll list what I've been doing different from past situations where I didn't get along with people: 1) two words...

Does Your Employer Know You’re On the Spectrum?

I'm not diagnosed with autism or aspergers, so I haven't disclosed that, but I'm open about my ADHD. Besides needing some unofficial accommodations, it wouldn't be feasible to hide. If I'm diagnosed with an ASC, I'll probably let it slip at some point.

How Do Kids With Asperger's Look At Parents?

It's true that loud sounds (including a raised voice) can be physically painful or otherwise stressful. If she's sensory defensive, that means she'll have problems with sound you normally wouldn't expect to be a problem. (And I think everyone is more sensitive as a child than they are as an...

Forcing your Aspergers son into particpation via sports, clubs etc...the right thing?

I think this isn't even an aspie-specific problem, but relevant to kids who are introverted. Sometimes I see an article about introversion/extroversion, and the comments are always filled with introverts who just heard about the concept and say something like, "I'm crying because I'm X years old...

How do you live in a dog-eat-dog society?

Hmm, I never think of it as a dog-eat-dog world. I'm pretty optimistic about people, in general. I'm not sure I understand the question, but... Being nice is a skill that needs to be learned, and a lot of people are bad at it. That includes me. Most people don't seem to realize they are bad at...

    Does Aspergers make YOU lazy?

My ex considered me lazy too. I have ADHD and that seems to be a common problem ADHD people face.

    Driving?

In my area, being unable to drive severely limits your employment options--and my options are limited enough by all my other qualities. I hate driving, but I was eager to learn to drive ASAP because not driving is worse! Even though you can start driving at 15 years 7 months old, I was over 20...

The World Is Not What I Expected

I can relate. In my case, I wasn't so talented--more like a Jack of all trades and a master of none. But I was good at school. I got good grades and everything. Even though I never had to study, it still took a lot of effort. After 15 years of misery and $45,000 of student debt, I was crushed to...

    Disturbing Office Trend

I have the good fortune of being an introvert in a region where introversion is the norm/majority/preference, so this probably won't happen around here too soon. Thank goodness... :(
