Really Cheap Energy Efficient Stoves - Rocket Stoves

The first type of rocket stoves that I read about were called a, "Dakota Firepit". They were basically a hole in the ground with a tunnel or two letting in extra air to sort of turbo charge the fire. This idea came from the Native Americans of the Dakota tribe. The fire uses little fuel, the fire cannot be seen from a distance and it is smokeless or very nearly so. This is all especially good if you want to cook and stay warm without giving away your location.

I discovered a youtube video that demonstrates how to make a rocket stove out of tin cans as a camping, outdoor cooking, or emergency preparedness idea. Then I discovered more videos and ads for sale of rocket stoves. There are some nice ones made out of heavier metal than tin cans that are advertised for backyard cooking or camping. There are also some nice-looking large ones made as a sort of fireplace substitute for inside homes. These costs thousands of dollars, not including the considerable shipping costs.

There are people who will come to your site and build you a rocket stove to heat your home. Some of these folks also teach classes to show you how to make and install your own rocket stove.

There are some different names for rocket stoves and there are different designs and different materials to make them out of. People in many different countries are making new rocket stove designs. Some of them are really amazing and it exciting seeing what they will come up with next.

I particularly like some of the rocket stoves that allow heat output to be directed to different areas of the home or for heating versus cooking purposes. Some of them include a warmer area that is good for raising bread or incubating yogurt or other fermented foods.

Some rocket stoves include a collar that fits around a pot to direct the heat to the pot more efficiently. Some rocket stove direct the heat horizontally to a bench or bed for keeping people warmer. Others do the same thing in a greenhouse for keeping plants warm. Youtube has quite a few videos about the greenhouse warming rocket stoves.

The possible efficiency of rocket stoves is 80% to 90% more efficient than a regular stove. Most rocket stoves are still designed with wood as the fuel, but more of them are being made with other fuel in mind. The first one that was very different in how it used fuel was one that used wood chips so that one did not have to get up in the middle of the night to stay warm, or keep the greenhouse warm. It used an augur to automate the feed of wood chips.
A more primitive version of this was a sort of J shaped tube that allowed larger pieced of wood to feed by vertically by their weight. This version is my preferred one if I end up making my own rocket stove for residential or greenhouse use.

One of the other names for rocket stoves is, "wood gasification" stoves. Some of these get complex and require some advanced skills to make them. A few of the designers of these stoves are making and selling them.

The earliest well documented rocket stoves are from India and are called Tandoori stoves. They are usually outdoor ovens, but some are being built into homes for heating and cooking indoors. Small clay versions of these can be purchased for outdoor use. I have not found any made outside of India at this time, but I have not checked for a while.

I could write more about rockat stoves, but can do that later. I would like to give our Spectrum people to have a more diverse sampling of what we need to start working on to survive and thrive.
