Avoiding Lead In Crock Pots

https://realfoodrn.com/is-there-lead-in-crock-pots/

Very small amounts of lead can build up in your system over time and do incredible damage inside your body and even your nervous system and brain. It is even worse for children. You do not want lead in your food. The FDA has "acceptable levels" of lead for crock pots. If you care about your health, no level of lead in your food is acceptable.

The article linked above explains more about the problem of lead in crock pots. Most of them are made in China where it is still a kind of "no holds barred" for food and cookware, environment. This means it is up to you to check for lead in your current crockpot and any you might want to replace it with. This is not going to be as easy as you might like, since a lot of the glazes on the ceramic ones contain lead, and the old one you already have probably has at least hairline cracks if not big chips that release lead from the ceramic materials into your food every time you use it.

I used to have two crock pots and sure enough, they were probably slowly poisoning me over the years. I got rid of both of them. My rice cooker replaces many of the jobs of a crock pot, so I have eked by with that and no crock pot for several years.

Concern for the environment and electric bills have made me look into crock pots again lately. I figure you might share my concerns, so maybe this post will help you out a little also.

I compared costs of various cooking methods and toaster ovens won out at 3cents per hour of cooking. I think thi is misleading because it will not hold much so you have to cook more often.
