Interview in an Hour: How It Went

It went well. How do I know?
  • Before the call, I sang scales to make my voice work and relax. I didn't relax, but I made some nice sounds (and many flat ones).
  • She called 15 minutes late and I was happy to accommodate her. I said "yes" when she asked for more time and I specified how much more time.
  • I remembered to use her name once in the conversation. People like hearing their names.
  • She knew what she wanted so I knew why she had picked me out of the pile. (A big pile. This is an employer of choice.)
  • I took notes as she talked so my mind was never blank, it was focused on a blank page getting filled.
  • I rephrased some questions as I heard them, and then forgot--because we were suddenly in a talk-shop-in-friendly-fast-way mode. I didn't notice myself relaxing, but I did.
  • I came up with context-sensitive questions on the fly and her answers made immediate sense.
  • What I want to do is what she wants done--I answered a basic question in depth and she actually stopped me because she knew I knew what I was talking about.
It doesn't mean I'll get the job, but all I really wanted to do was to help her decide if the team should meet me. And that's a lot less stressful than "get the job." And the necessary precursor for it.

3:49 PM UPDATE: I'm invited to meet the team. I think I'd better start this exercise again.
