I got a crunchyroll subscription this year, opening up a huge library for me to watch. Here's what I casually watched this winter, not in accordance to what was new but what I chose to watch at the time. I'll go ahead and list what my favorites were!
5. Venus Versus Virus
I was drawn to Venus Versus Virus because of the gothic aesthetic and how at first glance it looked like a Yuri or "girl love" series. It did not turn out to be so, nor did I think the story was particularly great. But it had a nostalgic, retro vibe that made it more impressionable than other anime I watched, therefore I think it created a better memory. I also love Lucia's design and outfit. It was full of drama and a strange concept of viruses.
4. Wolf's Rain
This one was super original and memorable. The plot may had lost me at times, but its originality and likable characters helped me stick it out until the end. Kind of a dark fantasy with imaginative settings. My favorite characters were Kiba, Toboe, and Blue, but I liked all of them and found their animalic personalities to be refreshing (And relatable, honestly.) I recommend this one if you haven't seen it already, although there's a risk of getting a little bored in my opinion.
3. The World Only God Knows
Just plain goofy. I had been eyeing this for years and was aware of it's intro songs, which are pretty good. Harem is not a genre I care for much, but this is my favorite. I also felt like the characters were relatable from an autistic perspective and a few seemed a bit autistic, to me anyway...
2. Dropkick on my Devil
A comedy featuring the brattiest character I've ever seen, Jashin-Chan the serpent. I love her. She manages to be a character that doesn't wear any clothes whatsoever, and it's acceptable because her hair covers her chest at all times. The cast of characters features girls from hell (like jashin-chan), and angels. This anime is also known for featuring Hatsune Miku as a character and is the anime to be most supported by crowdfunding.
1. Otome Yokai Zakuro
Okay, so why did this end up being my #1? First of all, I'm not normally one for shoujo romances. And I'm kind of surprised to put this at number one, but it had good balance and charm. It's also beautiful, I'm a sucker for that traditional lolita or a romantic Japanese aesthetic. (e.g laced kimono's) The romances were sweet and reasonable, and the main character is a sassy kitsune-like "half-Demon". I've also known about this one for years due to the evil banishing song but finally got around to watch it.
Final Notes:
Some honorable mentions are Pani poni Dash! and Konohana Kitan. They're good and I save them for rainy days so I didn't rank them. Yuri is my job! was the runner up, it's not bad. None of the shorts I watched were too special. Speaking of bad, my least favorite was The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady as it was grueling for me to finish all 12 episodes. I will give it credit though, it had substantial yuri content, at least at some point. Another one of the yuri I watched out of desperation for girl love content that in the end I just didn't care for. I completely left out a Centaur's life even though it had some good qualities, it just felt a little aimless and random. The first episode is a big yuri tease but that was it. I do however adore the snake character, Sassassul.
