Wondering if I have Asperger's

Hi all. I think I may have Asperger's. I'm 23 years old, and growing up, I've always been very anxious and intimidated in social situations. I never talked much in school to either other students or teachers, and I was officially diagnosed with Selective Mutism. I've developed better social skills since then, up until the past few years when I started to have panic attacks and am now a housebound agoraphobic.

Anyway, I took the AQ test and got a score of 34. Apparently, a score of higher than 32, points toward Asperger's. It's always been sort of hard for me to make friends, and I usually focused on a handful of very good friends, as opposed to several dozen mediocre or decent ones. I also don't really like making eye contact. I'll do it, but it's unpleasant to me. Not really with closed friends and family, but with strangers. However, I can usually interpret things how they are meant. For example, not only can I understand sarcasm, but I am actually a huge proponent of that style of humor. I realize that not all symptoms would be present in everyone. Also, my father was in his 40s when I was born, which apparently makes it more likely for the offspring to be diagnosed with autism.

It's hard for me to get to an appointment because of my agoraphobia, but I desperately wish to know if I have this or some other condition. I'm curious what advise any of you would have? Do you think it's possible I have Asperger's? Thanks in advance for the help!

It's certainly possible, though all we can really do is give you a layperson's assessment. Use the AQ test as a springboard into a discussion about ASD with an appropriately qualified mental health professional.

But no matter what your ultimate findings are, you're welcome here. :)

Welcome :)

You'll find that AS can sit on a spectrum, so it's always possible; even if only mild. This place is great for comparing stories and experiences, so hopefully you'll find your answer soon enough. Feel free to ask many questions; everyone's quite friendly, and helpful here.
