Using a Video Surveillance IP Camera

Anyone using a DIY video surveillance camera? You hook them up to your computer to video tape inside house outside house. Some many refer to them as a Nanny Cam. I am most likely over paranoid, but I want to set up a security system with no monthly fees. Using an iMac and there are several softwares that will record motion at specified times even using your computer video cam. External IP cam's I am not as familiar with, then if you put them outside you have to get power to them. Anyone attempted this sort of thing?

Currently playing with iMac, Security Spy software and there is an App that lets you see what your computer sees from an iPhone or iTouch or other device. Can see four camera's at once. I need to add camera's to my set up.
