I have a very brilliant and talented 4 year old boy, but I have suspected for some time that he may be on the spectrum.
He has very advanced fine motor skills. He was tracing letters, coloring within the lines, putting together massive puzzles, and playing video games by age 2. He has always been very advanced in this respect.
He frequently gets up and begins prancing or running circles around the living room while making humming or grunting noises.
He knows his alphabet, can count to 100, knows simple math problems, and has some sight words down.
He has been prefectly capable of using the restroom, preparing his own breakfast, brushing his hair and teeth, getting dressed, etc. since he was 3 years old. He is extremely self-sufficient.
He does not like things that are sticky. At his 1st birthday, he gently prodded the cake and then freaked out because his hand was messy. He has always been a very tidy eater, using a napkin or wet wipe for as long as I can remember.
He avoids things that are too hot, even when they are just warm. He prefers all of his food and bath water to be luke warm or room temperature.
He had some hearing loss due to frequent asymptomatic ear infections, so while being advanced in all other aspects, he has always been normal when it comes to language skills. We often have to scream to get his attention and when we ask him to bring us something, half of the time, he will bring the wrong item. It feels like he is not paying attention, but we always attributed that to hearing loss.
He wants to play with other kids. He stands near them and tries to initiate play and/or conversation, but I am noticing more and more that his peers tend to avoid him or shut him out. He doesn't notice this yet. It makes me worry for him because he is trying so hard to be a part of the group. He actually gets along with the girls better, which makes me doubt a spectrum disorder.
Seeing him with other kids makes me wonder. Is he being shunned by them because he is so far beyond them developmentally? Or because they have picked up on things I refuse to see?
The biggest confusion is that he handles change very well. He doesn't have nor need a specific schedule. He doesn't have any routines that must be adhered to. Our schedule is extremely unpredictable and he has never had issues with that. He is perfectly content in new settings.
What do you guys think? Do I have a genius or is his genius just a symptom of a spectrum disorder?
