The Autistic's Guide to Self-Discovery - Sol Smith/gain the skills to function and flourish as an autistic adult

Sol Smith combines current research, his personal experience as an autistic adult, and lessons learned as an educator to show how others living with the condition can transcend common mischaracterizations, embrace self-acceptance, overcome shame, and gain the skills to function and flourish.

Grazie! I’ve been wondering about this for a while, since I felt we’re prone to internalize limitations based on our struggles and mischaracterization in medias. Glad to see, I’m not alone in that regard.

P. 84

"Let's think about your own mask for a bit. Ask yourself:
What are times in your life when you felt the most alive and in
control? What were you doing, and was there something about
the activity that would later make it inaccessible or prevent you
from feeling 'allowed' to do it? Is there as aspect of your identity
that you were discouraged from expressing? When you hear
your own name, does it sound like you? "

Would I be correct to assume since you are posting about this book that you are recommending it?

I've seen some clips now by Mr. Smith and liked what I saw but I was a little hesitant to get his book. The reason being is that in his clips he mentions he runs a Neurodivergent site but when you go to that site it seemed like a pretty expensive monthly fee to be part of a forum. I guess I was worried about the validity of his book and if it was just a cash grab or not.

Yes.

I read the book this summer.
And requested that our local library buy it.
Excellent thank you. If it is good enough that you are even recommending it for your local library I will definitely look at getting it next time I'm getting an order of books.

I have to admit to being under read on the subject. A lot of articles online but only a few books at this point. Devon Price's Unmasking Autism, and Steve Silberman's Neurotribes.

I found this book much more useful than Unmasking Autism.
Neurotribes was interesting, but not in practical way.

I felt much the same way about Neurotribes. It was interesting from a historical context but not really in a practical way. The Unmasking Autism book had some useful bits but mostly it was just nice in seeing some of the things I'd always thought were only happening to me, also happen to others.

I've never understood why people think I don't understand who I am because I am skilled at masking? I know exactly who I am and I regularly celebrate it. I'm just also good at fitting in with people who are different than I am when I need to.

I decided to check and see if my local library had a copy of the Sol Smith book and they did. I read the first half of it last night actually. I don't know why but the way he describes a cat had me laughing harder than I have in a very long time.

"A cat is a four-legged, toaster-sized mammal with whiskers, a somewhat flat snout, and triangle ears". - Sol Smith

Glad you mentioned the library option.
