Smooth jazz genre compatibility

I was wondering, what genres do you think are compatible and incompatible with smooth jazz on the same playlist?

Compatible - Jazz fusion, R&B, Funk, Hip-Hop, Bubblegum Pop
Incompatible - Death metal, Country, Punk.

None. I keep my music collection in folders based on genre first, artists second. I've never considered one genre of music to be "compatible" with another. Maybe it's an OCD thang.

LOL...I can't imagine mixing the Beatles up with Wagner or the Supremes.

I don't know I have a little of everything lol. I don't care that they don't match.

But to answer your question, my guess would be something like Yacht Rock would be a good match.

I play my music on shuffle and listen to a little of everything no matter what genre. It makes for an interesting change of pace during the day.

Jazz fusion is a lot closer to death metal than you might think, and I'd never stick pop music on a jazz playlist. Everyone's tastes are different, though, and smooth jazz might even be a bit understimulating for my tastes. I much prefer avant garde or anything on the darker end of the spectrum, but it's always hard to find artists like this.

New age or specific types of ambient might be compatible, though(?).

Might I interject with some acquaintances of mine -

Page Hamilton is a Cal-Berkley graduate in Jazz and started the band HELMET not long after when he moved to NYC. Everything about his syncopated rhythms are Jazz born and based. His vocal stylings are Jazz inspired, as well.

Even before SLEEP TOKEN, his previous projects were cleaner, Jazz based songs. Syncopation wasn't as pronounced until adding in the djent / distorted guitars and bass, but the piano foundations of his songs are so, so Jazz inspired. His vocal range is absurdly fantastic, but the inspiration and styles used are obviously born from Jazz.

I must say, I do appreciate the "Smooth Jazz" genre much more than mainstream jazz. -More relaxing.

What is the difference between jazz and smooth jazz? - All For Turntables
