Two thieves posed as delivery men to steal a laptop from a man with autism, a court has heard.

Kristian Smith, 22, and Jaik Williams, 20, knocked on their victim’s door at his flat in Pencoed, near Bridgend , before carrying out the distraction burglary.

The pair got inside the property and, while he was distracted, stole his laptop computer and other items, said prosecutor John Lloyd.

Some time later, they knocked on another door, offering the laptop for sale and a mobile phone went missing.

Both had previous convictions but in a pre-sentence report written by a probation officer, Williams was described as being “not a serious risk of physical harm to the public but more of a public nuisance when under the influence of drugs”.

He was said to have problems with cannabis, valium and alcohol and had fallen out with his family at the time of the offences but to have since “made up” with his mum.

His lawyers asked that his sentence be suspended so that he could go back to live with her at Meadow Croft, Barry .

'No excuse'

Barrister Kevin Seal, said Smith would miss seeing his child if he was locked up.

“It is no excuse but drugs play a part in all his offending,” he told Cardiff Crown Court .

Judge Phillip Harris-Jenkins told both men their sentences would be immediate.

Smith, who had previous convictions for burglary, theft, criminal damage and taking a car was jailed for 20 months after admitting burglary and theft.

Williams who has committed offences of burglary, theft and robbery in the past was given 12 months in a young offenders institution.

The judge said there was “no evidence” they had been aware of their victim’s autism.

They pleaded guilty to burglary and Smith further admitted theft and possessing cannabis.
