Oops, l think our roofer decided to take the money and split

My wife has had to use contractors since my stroke did not too bad so far I can tell who are the clowns, have good plumber, electrician, even a handy man. Found a honest roofer even got him some work with others.

Let's stay civil. Being that there is a cultural difference, our remarks may come across as a different interpretation to others. Don't think there was any disrespect, it's just people sharing their thoughts. Let's keep this light.

I had a similar issue when a contractor stopped responding after getting a deposit. I’ve since started using companies with a solid track record and local presence — https://emersonproservices.com/carrollton/ handled my roof work and actually showed up, finished everything on time, and kept communication clear. Felt way more at ease knowing they weren’t some fly-by-night crew.

I just see it as a challenge for both contractors and their clients. Mostly due to precarious economic and meteorological times that have stressed the market as well as the resources of honest contractors to deliver their services successfully and in a timely manner.

Particularly given states like Florida with overwhelming amounts of damage to residential and commercial structures due to hurricanes.

Conversely the existence of fraud has always been an exposure to property owners with a small number of persons with criminal intent pretending to be legitimate contractors only to a point of receiving payment for services never intended to be rendered.

There are even subcultures of people known to specialize in this form of fraud over a lifetime, even passing it onto their children to ensure future generations of such practices. - "Hardcore Scammers".

Roof, pool fraud is rampant in Florida. They just arrested about 20 plus contractors for fraud. In the end, the person did come thru and did a great job on the roof and helped me reinforce the carport. Sadly, he is struggling with health issues, l must find another person for interior work.

Apart from tree work here- I'm not climbing up 70' to chainsaw a 9" diameter branch off!!- I've only used comtractors twice. It was for the same overall job- one was doing the interior demolition/new septic drains; the other outside installing a new septic tank/ dry wells. I researched the companies and looked up the licenses and bond insurance coverage etc. They both ended up doing a good job- but yeah I've heard the horror stories about contractors so I was a little stressed until it was finished. In my state the contractor is to get the monies as the project progresses. The inside guys got paid in 3 increments; the outside guy asked for a 6% down payment, with the remainder after completion.
Hopefully I will have an addition to the house constructed in a few years. I hope I don't contribute to this thread afterwards with my own contractor(s) horror novel.......
