One of these days, Alice.

Do you believe we have the technology needed to colonize the Moon?
I follow this topic closely. We do have the technology right now. It would be relatively "primitive"... maybe a bit dangerous, at times, but yes.

That said, that tech is on a truly rapid exponential curve of advancement. What we will have in 2026 and 2028 and 2030 will seem like sci-fi as compared to 2025. We are living in some amazing times with regards to all of this.

I don't know why your title addresses us all as "Alice"?😳🤔
Jervis Tetch!?😳 That's not you sneaking onto the forum is it?😳🤔 We're on to you.🤨🕵🏼‍♀️

Outdated is right, it is from The Honeymooners and it was the constant threat of Ralph Cramden to his wife whenever she called him out on something. A threat that was never acted upon. He would say "One of these days Alice, One of these days, to the MOON alice." and would make a threatning gesture with a clenched fist raised as if to deliver an upercut.

As for colonizing the moon, I recently read a startup is selling vacation spots within 10 years and they are selling them at 10 million a pop. Not sure that anyone who has that much money to waste in such a frivolous manner would be fit enough to survive for any length of time.

Thanks for the explanations. I had no idea that was a saying and was quite puzzled as to why everyone on the forum was seemingly being called "Alice" collectively. 😳 Being unaware of the cultural reference, I was way off base. But, I'm sure anyone familiar with the source of my own reference understands where it came from. @JudeB Sorry for the misunderstanding. Don't worry, I won't turn on the Bat signal.😅

That's ok! I'm not the Mad Hatter, if that's what you thought. Did you think I was someone else?

Moon is too abrasive for equipment space suits. First time ignorance was bliss.
It was many years ago now but I once saw an interesting plan for making Mars more habitable by detonating nuclear explosives in a series along a tectonic plate line to trigger volcanic activity. This would increase atmospheric density and create clouds and water.

I didn't think you REALLY were (he's fictional after all), but he was what came to mind when I saw everyone being addressed as Alice.😅

As for the actual question of the thread, I'm not sure why people want to colonize the moon.😕

I think people want to do something like that because they want to test the limits of humanity and our scientific achievements, present and future. Does that make sense?
I always though it was simply because we've already drastically overpopulated this planet and we've run out of room. Infinite growth within a finite space simply isn't possible.

Better results could be achieved by looking in to ethical ways in which we can limit our population growth, and in fact achieve population decline for several generations. Religious nutters don't like that idea though.

My favorite subject was science and my childhood was packed with spontaneous science experiments (eg. adding pollen to a jar of water as a child to see how much it takes to support the weight of a small toy, mixing orange juice with milk inside my own mouth to observe flavor differentiations as the chemical reaction between the lactose in the milk and the acid in the orange juice took place, taking seed pods and electric gadgets apart to see how they work and figure out why) but some things I just have to wonder if people are tampering with things we weren't really meant to (eg. firing rockets at distant planets, editing genes of living organisms).

It would be a real waste of talent if you do not get an post secondary education.
