HALIFAX - An Ontario teen got special treatment aboard a navy ship in Halifax on Friday night.

The Royal Canadian Navy says 13-year-old Odin Camus, of Peterborough, Ont., was promoted to the rank of honorary ship's captain over the course of a three-hour sail on the frigate HMCS Montreal.

Camus, who has Asperger's syndrome, came to the attention of the media in March when none of his classmates responded to invitations for his birthday party.

His mother took to social media to ask for birthday wishes for Camus, and one of the responses she received was from the Royal Canadian Navy.

Navy spokesman Sean Ritchie says top officials got the idea to invite Camus, who is a sea cadet, on board HMCS Montreal because of his longtime desire to be in the navy.

Ritchie says this is Camus' first time visiting the city.
