Let's End School & Workplace Bullying

I saw a great segment on CBS's Sunday Morning show yesterday talking about Tyler Clemente & bullying in general it was a great story. I keep saying it..bullying is EXTREMELY damaging. It nearly ruined my life. I am mildly autistic & also openly gay. It's gotten better since I have become an adult, but I am still suffering severe flashbacks & post traumatic stress disorder because of it. I also have severe anxiety which is still severe at times & causes me to hate public gatherings. When people make fun of you for who you are, in the most formative years of development, that really messes with you. Tyler Clemente as we all know tragically committed suicide by jumping off a bridge in New York because some of his peers found a video of him being intimate with another man & then proceeded to shame him & make fun of him online. He apparently saw no way out so he ended his life. It's pretty pathetic when people have to make other people feel miserable to make themselves feel better.

Tyler's story hit home for me. I was bullied all through school for being gay & shy. I was constantly harassed & tormented & called names & other worse stuff & nobody ever intervened or did anything about it. Not one person. People have got to stop bullying other people based on sexual orientation & being shy & more importantly people in positions of authority have got to stand up & make clear that it will not be tolerated period. If teachers had stood up for me in school or just one would have offered to talk, this would have helped, but nobody did anything. I was suicidal & nearly acted on it. Last year was my last attempt because of the pain of feeling bullied. I am now on medication but this does not get rid of all scars.

Here's what I'd like to see: Workplace guidelines for employers to make crystal clear from day 1 that no bullying based on sexual orientation, gender, or race will be tolerated, period. And if someone is caught doing it, they must be reprimanded. It's a form of harassment after all. Also, in the segment, they talked about people going from bystanders to being proactive, if you see or hear bullying, do something about it..figure something out. Don't just sit there with your face buried in your phone like a fool. After all, what if it was you?

In my opinion, we should not only demand non discrimination based on sexual orientation for hiring, but also, make clear rules/guidelines for employers that upon hiring, ZERO bullying or shaming will be tolerated. It's the worst form of dehumanization & trust me it really messes people up. It's extremely damaging. You may think words don't matter but trust me they do.

Anti gay bullying is still a big big problem. Apparently lots of people seem to feel better about themselves if they demean & put down lgbt people. And I've seen & heard it by lgbt people against other lgbt people too sadly, although in my case it has mostly been straight people doing the bullying, in high school & a couple of places of employment. Just today I heard guys on the radio having a big laugh over transgendered people, calling them "shemen". Really trick?! It's 2015 people. This has to stop. Tyler Clemente & many others deserve better. Thanks for listening.
