Everybody , let's build the AspiesCentral.com racecar! It's a Le Mans Prototype 1 car, also called LMP1. It might take a little research to figure out all the parts, but everybody list a part that would go on a racing car. To make it easier, it will not be a hybrid. I'll start with the the splitter.
 
Yikes! 5.5 liters doesn't give us much wiggle room in the powerplant,so I propose a W-10 design to keep the center of gravity down and the unit shorter without going the boxer route ;)
 
How bout a steering wheel, hydraulic disc brakes on all four wheels, rack and pinion steering with hydraulic power steering. A suspension that has upper and lower control arms in the front and rear axles. A 4x4 drivetrain. For a tranny I would have a 5 speed tranny with a 4-way splicer. Torsen front and rear differentials.
 
Modern LMP cars use a carbon fiber tub with a integral crash pretction cell. A seven- speed paddle shifted gearbox is a must. They're often hybrids.
 
No splicers, but many are now AWD with an electric motor driving the front wheels. This one isn't a hybrid for simplicity.

You have to keep in mind that you are building an endurance competition machine. Eliminating as much monkey-motion as possible is required to keep it all performing properly.
The more stuff you add to the drivetrain,the more there is to break ;)

I can pull my old CNC programs out to cross drill and slot the brake rotors if we choose to go iron,otherwise we should look into some carbon fiber rotors on inboard mounted brakes. I think a remote mounted coil over shock absorber bellcranked sprung suspension would work well in this application. FIA rules tie us to a $ limit we have to stay inside of,so development of crazy ideas will eat up the money pretty quick.
There were some advances in flywheel operated regenerated braking and acceleration units that were tried out in Formula1 that eeked out a little more performance in the big picture that might be the hot ticket ;)

How about a Garage 56 entry. That is for testbed cars displaying new technologies. A gas turbine hybrid!
 
The car will have a 5.5 liter naturally aspirated engine, or a 4 liter forced induction engine.

The hybrid class has no limits on engine displacement,only a class limit on the lowest chassis weight.
The trick to working in a formula class is to see how far the rules can be bent. They give you the main set of restrictions and you have to find out where you can cheat the rulebook ;)
