Jazz

I don't know if there are many fusion fans here, but I listened to this (Crossings) for the first time last night and loved it. I was already into Headhunters, Sextant, and Thrust, but hadn't heard this one. I'm impressed by how much music Herbie Hancock made on his own and as a sideman. He doesn't get the credit Miles or Coltrane do, but I've sought out a lot of stuff if his name is in the credits.

The Vijay Iyer Trio - Break Stuff

This has a really nice classical feel to it. A lot of musicians come from an art school background, but Iyer has degrees in math and physics and has studied music cognition.

Anthony Braxton - Creative Orchestra Music 1976

This is a really fun release. It feels like a successor to Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch! It has some great players like Leo Smith, Kenny Wheeler, and Dave Holland, too.

Julius Rodriguez - "Blues at the Barn"

This is a great track. The phasing on the piano was a neat touch. I'm not sure how much I'd want to hear tape effects on jazz, but it was interesting here.

Eberhard Weber - Yellow Fields

This is credited to his band Colours in some places, so I'm surprised the cover just lists Weber. It's a great album, especially "Sand-Glass":

My favorite for cool jazz, John Pizzarelli. That guitar! That voice! Wow!

And another favorite of mine.

I have yet to experience him live, but he is such a craftsman that I'd enjoy an impeccable performance from him.

I also think that Western Swing got pretty close to Jazz. Here's a favorite of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys done by Asleep at the Wheel. Solo improv and all.

Lisa Ekdahl - Open Your Window

Lisa has been on my top-5 Swedes list since the 1990s. 😄 I love her voice.
She does pop and jazz, with some bossanova.
