Back in the 80s she was so hyperactive and intent on shocking people with her sexuality, but in an extremely pedantic, aspie-type fashion. Once she calmed down a little in the 90s, she started looking really aspie in interviews, not making eye contact and getting frustrated when the interviewer interrupted or misinterpreted her. I always noticed that she rolled her eyes a lot when she was talking, or her eyes would be moving back and forth while she was answering questions, so that it almost looked like she was "reading" her answers in her head. She's always come across to me as extremely disciplined and fixated on whatever project she's working on. Her cultural and spiritual interests have always been quirky, especially by pop celebrity standards. Her history with men is really interesting, she always tended to fluctuate between difficult, "project" men and younger boytoys.

Then when watching an interview with her sister, she herself says she had extreme ADD and her eyes keep going all over the place. I know it's not exactly that cut and dry when it's passed down to others...but still.

Hmm. I never considered her for spectrum folk. Could be, though, as she really committed to non-conformity - could've been involuntary, lol.

Let's go over a little of Madonna's background. She was a rich kid who had a fight with her daddy and moved to New York where she hung out with other rich kids and, within a couple years, was signed to a big record label. Her gimmick was being outlandishly "independent" which, summed, was using her sexuality to get what she wanted and promoting that as empowering to eighties women. Since Madonna was a thin white woman with big jubblies, everyone paid attention. So, she had all this stress from the music industry and her public image.

From the late eighties through the mid-nineties, Madonna became very, very popular in academic feminist circles as a symbol of the strong, independent modern woman. She was seen as a change maker and trailblazer, getting all sorts of attention and academic articles published about her life, image, and philosophy. Not all were good, BTW, as many criticized Madonna's brand of independence being predicated on getting men to bring her things instead of a substantive shedding of a need for men. So, she had all this stress from the academic crowd.

She also got a lot of flack from religious groups, as one could imagine. Her popularity and influence waned in the late nineties as the music industry continually used her success as a template to sell new bands.

Since Madonna had all of these stressors from typical and atypical sources, I'm gonna say a lot of her strange behavior was in being terrified of saying the wrong thing. Madonna is smart and talented, and has always been careful to engineer how she acts and responds. I'd wager these are bigger factors in her appearing autistic...although being on the spectrum is a definite possibility and, likely, how she had the stamina to thrive for so long in such an awkward social position.
