I agree with it in principal, but I've also been a heavy smoker all my life.

Explainer for other nationalities: Our government pays for our health, so it's in our government's best interests to invest in preventative measures. We get cheaper sunscreen because the government subsidising that is cheaper than the government having to pay for cancer treatments. The government subsidises most of our medicines for the same reason. And that's why they're working so hard at wiping out the use of tobacco.

That is very true. We copied your mob and introduced prohibition back in the 1920s, and it was every bit as disastrous here as it was in the US. Now we've gone and done the exact same thing again and we have some massive wars going on between crime gangs. Fire bombings, shootings, etc.

Mainstream forums? I've been online even before the Internet's inception. Still using DOS back then.

Though by the late 90s I began to retreat from social media platforms in general. "Just say no to Facebook" mentality, determining that most of them are inherently toxic for autistic people.

This is the only forum I actually participate in as a member. Mostly to learn and come to grips with who and what I am. From a perspective of people I won't easily find much of anywhere else.

Though I access any number of technical forums for information alone, but never participating.

I think a lot of people just like whinging and whining, Poor Bugger Me syndrome. Attention seekers. For some of them it even seems competitive - my sensitivities are worse than your sensitivities.

What keeps people coming back here is the fact that the forum is moderated quite strictly, if someone starts getting nasty they very quickly get booted out.

I never took to social media, in fact in my opinion it should be called Antisocial media. A lot of people feel comfortable saying a lot of things online that they wouldn't dare say to someone's face down at the pub. So in that respect the old fashioned pub is a much safer and more friendly place than Reddit or Facebook.

I have quite serious sensory issues. But I don't like Reddit.

For some of them it even seems competitive - my sensitivities are worse than your sensitivities.

I mostly get the "you must be unemployed and flunked school with sensory issues like that" and... it doesn't make a lot of sense to me and I don't find confirmation for it IRL that sensory issues make you unemployed and a school dropout. I know a lot of people with sensory issues like mine and none of them are unemployed dropouts.

So in that respect the old fashioned pub is a much safer and more friendly place than Reddit of Facebook.

I've sometimes thought that Millenials were the true digital natives, they helped build the internet and so many of our programs. Gen Z are more like UI natives. Did you browse GameFaqs, Superuser etc.? I got many of my Pokemon cheat codes there as a kid. The internet seemed to be a lot less sanitised in the past but the users weren't as... immature as contemporary users are. I spent a lot of my time on Reddit as a kid and absorbed a lot of their ideologies and behaviour which I'm trying to get rid of to a certain extent. A lot of Gen Z was raised off internet culture so it'd be hard to fit in imo if I chose to give that up. I've never really seen the original forums though since I'm Gen Z. Geocities looks quite nice

I'm one of the dropouts lol but it's mostly my fault. Should've tried harder to mask instead of thinking I'm unique. If I had masked better I might not have dropped out due to isolation

I still recall the era where I didn't even need a firewall, let alone anti-virus programs. But having worked inside a gaming software publisher/developer is one of the reasons I gave up gaming many years ago. They're focused on shareholders and the equity they bring on a quarterly basis. Far more than pandering to their customers.

Many years ago now I helped work on a programming project with a couple of yank programmers. They were telling people that they were autistic because they thought it made them sound smarter, like the Rain Man.

I didn't bother to correct them but I did point out that most of their programming errors were being fixed by an alcoholic drug addicted high school drop out with mental problems.

Same, well not exactly but I view most company mottos/mission statements with a heavy dose of scepticism nowadays. There's the impression that companies are slaves to slaveholders - I mean shareholders

Those must have been one of those that are in it for the money, not out of passion

I have never been even close to dropping out or unemployment. I just don't see the immediate connection. People with all sorts of (mental) health problems are more likely to drop out of school and/or be unemployed. It's not exclusive to autism specteum or sensory issues.

Ah I see. You've made it really far though that's impressive

I was scholastically brilliant but they always held me back, tried to hobble me, tried to make me be just as dumb as everyone else. They even made me repeat year 10 because I was "socially immature". I was so angry over that that I gave up on academia completely. If they had taught as quickly as I was able to learn I could have finished highschool by age 12 and had my first PhD by age 16 but that doesn't fit with how most people want to view the world. They want everyone to be made from the same cookie cutter mold that they were.

Ignore whatever anyone else ever tries to tell you about what you can and can't do. Or even worse - what you should and shouldn't do. How can they possibly know you better than you know yourself?

Live your own life however you see fit and if other people complain about it rub their noses in it and make them hate you even more. It's all they deserve.
