A five-year-old autistic boy was left in floods of tears after callous thieves targeted his specially-adapted garden.

Carl Smith returned from a weekend trip with his mother Karon White to find that special turf worth £1,000, which is part of a sensory garden kit, had been stolen. The family only moved to their home in Clover Court, Sprowston just over a week ago from Horsford, and Miss White could not believe somebody would target equipment belonging to her son. Miss White, 45, said: “I am absolutely disgusted.

“To take away grass from a special needs little child who enjoys playing on it throughout the year is just beyond belief.

“My little boy was sobbing his heart out once he realised that the grass has gone.” The turf had been safely moved from their old home and was rolled up in their new front garden when they headed to Carlisle to visit family over the bank holiday weekend.

Miss White met the £1,000 cost of her son’s equipment through her son’s disability living allowance.

The sensory kit was a favourite of Carl’s, often bringing a smile to his face as he played out on it throughout the year.

The grass within the kit makes it much safer for Carl to play outside and is not affected by the changeable weather conditions in different seasons of the year.

His mother explained: “It’s a lot softer and cleaner than regular turf. It looks perfect all year round and gives Carl the chance to play outside throughout the year.”

The expensive turf measured up four metres by 10 metres and it was also of a significant weight, leading Miss White to believe that there must have been a group of people who stole it.

She said: “It couldn’t have been a car because it would have been too heavy; you would have needed a truck and a few of you to move it.”

Police are now investigating the theft and are looking for anybody in the Clover Court area who may have seen something suspicious to come forward and contact them immediately.

Miss White hoped coverage of the theft would help lead to the return of her son’s beloved kit.

She said: “I hope that the thieves read this and feel really bad for what they have done and return the kit to us.”
