How do you guys deal with the term "autistic" being abused online?

When some idiot on a forum I used to go on Googled me, found I was Aspie and literally told the world without my consent, I started to get called retarded and stuff I can't even repeat....

If you want to debate it go right on ahead, but check this out: never use your full name on any website you go to. Ever. Use a pseudonym and remain anonymous. I can name exceptions like social media (e.g. Facebook), but that's another discussion for another day. Beyond that, just...no. Bad idea. It's happened to you once before, so why not give it a shot?

Also (not that the internet is the court of law or anything) assume that anything you reveal about yourself can and will be used against you, possibly by someone with a perpetual chip on their shoulder that needs knocking off. That, or some creep looking for another human puppet...or worse. The less you give about yourself, the better.

Some people just like to rile people up because they want to feel superior in some way. They probably don't have much going for them outside the internet so they try to feel all alpha online by taking their frustrations out on others. Don't give them the attention they want.

I never got the "it's the internet!" mentality either. Yes it's the internet, but we're all human beings behind the computer screens. We're going to have emotions by what people say online just as if someone said it in real life. If you're telling people to kill themselves just because they are offended by something you said, it sounds to me that you're much more sensitive than the person who is offended because you can't admit being wrong sometimes.

social media have given the lazy and stupid a quasi anonymous voice, anyone can say anything without really having fear that it is tied to them personally, and there are always enough morons on to agree with them,

it's freedom of speech, without any responsibility for what is said

the cowardly and bigoted person's wet dream

conclusion, stop caring what they write, they are going to write it anyway, if you allow yourself to get annoyed you are letting them win, if you react to it you will just encourage the moronic masses to troll even more

although these days, not as many people are stil burdened by feelings of shame, many could consider it a mark of honour

the church screwed up a lot, but their concepts of shame, social control and ultimate accountability managed to keep many in line

can't happen soon enough, imo people should be outed and shamed publicly when they act like trash, they could create a shame page where these people are identified with real name and screen names

Not necessarily. There's also a very 'judgy' aspect of social media where they publicize and condemn, like a kangaroo court.

Interesting book by Jon Ronson on it.

it's an awkward balance, we used to believe in trusted specialists and their opinions, these were often proven as false or unreliable or selfserving

now we've gone the other way, every moron has an opinion and just loves to share it, and every moron thinks himself justly qualified to judge others

power to the people...

it would work if there weren't so many more morons than there are intelligent people

Point taken. After all, there's cable news networks which seem dedicated to this principle, rather than rely on or promote the rule of law.

Though it's not entirely clear whether they really represent partisan public sentiment or merely the interest of shareholders. Though ultimately I suspect most people believe that audience shares actually drive such an equation.

At times I'm inclined to lament that social media itself is completely out of control. Driven by malice, political conviction and corporate profits. Is this the best society can come with?

We may not have the Roman Coliseum, Rollerball or even Hunger Games. But we do have the Internet.

Dunning kruger effect mixed in with like minded people finding each other.
Ignorance joins together in large groups...
Potentially society destroying.

Cognitive biases go parabolic.

What we gonna do?

it's just like roman times, cheap food and games for the masses

the masses must be entertained, what's more entertaining than allowing intellectually frustrated people judge others, it's empowering to them, social media creates a global gathering place for the church of the ignorant, so they can all feel better about themselves by judging and looking down at others

i say go back to the olden days and call ignorant people ignorant, and try to use shame to motivate them to get their act together

but like i said, few people feel ashamed about what they do, they just blame someone else, they are not poorly mannered, you are intolerant, etc etc etc

another example i encounter frequently in gaming, is when new players expect a free ride, ie expect everyone else do everything for them, give them the best gear, invest their time in helping them level up etc,
if you refuse and tell them to do their own work you like you did, you get labled and an elitist,
having worked for the best gear etc is no longer an achievement , 'you simply have no life' and because they do have a life you should give them whatever they want and do whatever they want

sry i'm so vocal/extreme about it, empowered ignorance is just something that really irks me

it's like giving a moron an automatic rifle

Well, so far so good.

I mean no one has posted, "Welcome to AC. And may the odds be ever in your favor!"

Chucacabra troll. Love it. Sorry if it's something bad but it sounds cute. This site is pleasant and well balanced. People make reasoned points and don't expect to just label others. People are amusing and generally kind. It's a haven I guess.
