How are the reading conventions called?

One of the things I really like, other than reading myself, is hearing someone read. There are some events that I've seen in some movies - I don't know if this actually happens - when people gather to read fragments of books and converse about books. I would like to know how this is called, I've tried looking in the internet for quite some time but my ignorance surpasses my internet seeking skills.

I would like to try to attend some here in Spain (even though I don't know if they exist, I'll try to find some).

Are these typical in the USA?

Here in the US where I am, I've found book clubs on meetup.com (haven't gone to any, but I've seen them on there). I wonder if meetup.com is available for your area?
