An autistic child is shaving off his Afro to raise money for charity after his mum underwent surgery to remove cancerous cells.

Eddie Stimson, of Mulberry Way, Hitchin, will shave off his hair to fundraise for Cancer Research UK and donate his locks to be used to make wigs for cancer patients.

The 12-year-old, who has autism and ADHD, decided upon the chop following his mum Lisa's surgery in January, to remove cancerous cells from her cervix.

Miss Stimson said: "I had a smear test a couple of months before the operation and they discovered I had stage two cancer cells that had to be removed.

"I was worried at first and didn't want the surgery as I'm frightened of anything to do with blood, but if I didn't have it done, my children wouldn't have a parent. I couldn't let that happen.

"I was calmer when doctors told me they wouldn't cut me open, they would go in from the side and I'd be put to sleep."

Miss Stimson had her operation on January 20 at the Lister Hospital, two days before Eddie's birthday.

"Eddie was nervous and was glad to see me once it was all done. He understood we couldn't do much for his birthday as I was unwell," said Miss Stimson.

"He was really sweet and made me a get well soon card and looked after me."

Eddie lives at home with his mum and ten-year-old brother Patrick. He attends The Priory School in Hitchin.

He is aiming to raise £250 and will donate his shaved hair to a charity that makes wigs for cancer patients.

The shave is planned for the last day of March.

Miss Stimson said: "I'm hoping to see if the school or community centre will hold the event. Or maybe I'll take him down the hairdressers and film it.

"I think Eddie is doing a lovely thing and I'm very proud of him."

In the past when I was very stressed out, I have shaved my legs or my pubes. And before that I used to self-harm, but I stopped that. But they both made me feel the same way.
