High Potential...

Watched the trailer on YT. I’m not familiar with Castle, so the premise reminded me of a cross between Dexter and GWH, personally. I want to check this out, thanks!
 
I found Haut Potentiel Intellectuel's first season on Hulu to be a fun watch, though some of the episodes were a bit weak (just my opinion). Apparently, the Fifth season is debuting in France today. The main character, dresses in a way that made me think of a street walker from a seventies cop show. To my way of thinking, she does not come across as someone with a 160 IQ. She is not eccentric enough, just opportunistic.

I am a tiny bit leery of watching another Americanized version of a TV show whose origins come from an entirely different cultural mindset, as those usually come up wanting. The U.S. version of Ghosts came close but was still a bit disappointing in comparison to the British version for one reason or another. (I have been an avid fan of Television since 1951). There is always one thing or another that seems to get lost in translation for general consumption here, seemingly unable to find the correct mix of ingredients.

I will watch the first episode of HIP from ABC, but beyond that I am more interested in the rest of the French version. I find myself feeling a bit trepidatious over the distinct possibility that HULU will not pick up the other seasons of the original because of this anglicized version from ABC. That would be a disappointment as well as a suspect and possibly venal move on the streaming services part. I hope this does not happen but, as I am a bit of a born cynic, it is a distinct possibility as the company behind this is Disney. I will say no more.

The female lead "wears" it differently.
Some critics have accused its writers of promoting misandry, but...
its larger story arc involves her looking for her "vanished" husband (and trusting that he did not leave intentionally).

The "flower" clue reminded me a little bit of Legally Blonde (2001).

Right up there with Dr. Gregory House being a misanthrope I suppose...
 
Back again!

I wound up watching the first episode of the adaptation on ABC. It was the same story and plot line as the original but something, as I suspected, didn't click with me. As I could not quite decide what the problem was for me, I went back to the original but this time watching the original French with subtitles, rather than the dubbed version, to get the full flavor of the original cast.


I do not want to get into what I consider the defects in the translation. Rather I would urge anyone who watches the ABC knockoff to take the extra time to watch the original and tell me I am wrong about it being the superior of the two. It is racier, funnier, and has more flare for small character touches that were either completely eliminated from the U.S. version or were rewritten in a less effective manner, most likely due to the Disney police censoring things. The most obvious being that Morgane is something of a 'klepto' as well as not above a bit more civil disobedience than in the ABC version. The segment dealing with the letter sent to the attorney is similar but also quite a bit different in the French version showing the police detective as more willing to bend the law to catch a perp..

Not to my knowledge as Karadec is always in Morgane's face about not following procedure and rendering evidence useless. As the series progresses her influence on him changes him, which has an effect on her. I have seen three seasons of HPI and hope to see the fourth soon, as the end of the third left things in a deliberately unsettled state.

The letter is tainted and winds up getting thrown out in both versions and the reason is almost the same.
In the U.S version, Morgan enters the attorney's office twice and is seen which later leads to the to the prime suspect walking. (Twice seen because Karadec is a bit duplicitous about the information in the letter but wants nothing to do with tainted evidence.)

In the French version, the letter is kept by Karadec who later plants it while a legal search is progress. The end result winds up the same.

I suspect the U.S version wished to keep things a bit more squeaky-clean and not impugn the chain of evidence in regards a police officer
