Hi, my name is Kayla, I am twenty years old and have just got my diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (which is not a option on this site for your diagnosis) a couple of months ago. My mom originally tried to get me diagnosed when I was five but the specialists could not agree on a diagnosis and as a result I got none but was able to receive some extra help in school when it was required with the reports from my testing, so my mom didn't worry about fighting for a diagnosis. When I left highschool though there was no support for me and getting a job seemed impossible so we fought to get me back in for testing and finally got a diagnosis. They no longer use the term aspergers, PDD, PDD-NOS, or high functioning autism in my area anymore for the exact reason that I did not get a diagnosis when I was younger, no one could agree on what symptoms belonged where and often people who needed it would walk away without a diagnosis so they combined it all into a the umbrella of ASD. Now though we are trying to find support in my area and are running into dead ends everywhere.

Welcome! I've been through a very similar process to yours, and was just diagnosed with Aspergers (The doc said the diagnosis didn't exist anymore, but used the term so we understood) back in November. Finding that support network is very important, but not all areas have good ones. I hope you find something to help you, though.

The forums are also filled with helpful, friendly people, so I'm sure you'll have no problem talking to folks here. Have a good stay! :D

Welcome Kayla :)

Yes, we hear a few stories, of members, struggling to find their places, on the spectrum, due to a lot of constant changes, and general confusion. It's especially hard for women, on the spectrum, to obtain a diagnoses. I hope you find this community to be a refreshing change. We're rather friendly, helpful, and supportive. I've added a few resources, below, which may be of interest to you too.

Regarding adding new titles, for diagnoses status, you can post suggestions here, so that an administrator can look in to it. Brent generally takes care of those types of issues, around here: Site Questions, Suggestions & Feedback | AspiesCentral.com

Kayla I'm having the same problem depending on where you live though there are jobs that having Aspergers is a requirement of the job.
